Eliminating Smoke From A Cigar Lounge

A friend was asking me today to help him with a new problem.

He's a big cigar smoker and wants to build a cigar lounge in his house where he (and friends) can smoke in peace. But he doesn't know how the "real" cigar places are able to vent out the smoke and replenish the fresh air while still maintaining the environment. I've heard of Smokeeters but they don't seem to perform too well from what I've seen.

Any experiences with this sort of thing?

Thanks!

In his house, the most effective solution would probably be to use single-pass, conditioned outside air, but this is going to be expensive to very expensive depending on where he lives. The most cost effective solution would probably be continuous HEPA filtration with an activated charcoal prefilter and frequent filter changes. The problem with most home HEPA filters is that in order to move a decent amount of air they are pretty loud. The best solution to that is to build an insulated cabinet or closet and duct the air from the top of the room, through the filter and then back into the room near the floor. He will also need to keep the room at negative pressure compared to the rest of the house. The best way to do this would be with a small bathroom type exhaust fan in the room ducted to the outside.

Or he could just put up a small outside structure, like those sheds they sell at Home Depot, run power, and then use space heaters and install a window air conditioner. That is what I would do.

Something that puts out negative ions (but not ozone) would be helpful, too. You need something that blows the negative ions, not merely produces them.

Candles.

Fine Tobacco Stores sell special candles to burn. Ideally, while smoking tobacco, not after. Even regular candles do a good job of clearing the air. The kind they sell at Tobacco Shops have some ingredient that makes them more effective, but standard candles work well too. It's a tip I read in a Cigar Magazine, back during the cigar boom in the early '90s. I tried it, and found it to be very effective.

To hell with the Home Despot sheds and convince him to build something like the Elemeno from this site in his back yard:

And it has a sleeping loft up top incase he ever gets in Dutch with the Little Woman.

Thanks for the suggestions!

My friend is a bit crazy. He's got a big house and has a lot of friends over to smoke so the candle isn't able to handle the smoke volume and I wonder if a home unit could do the same. He's open to commercial units if that's what it will take.

Any other thoughts?

I enjoy one or two good stogies a year. But if you need to retrofit your house, you are probably over-indulging.

I don't think you can ever prevent smoke smell from permeating everything. I can smell a guy smoking in his car with both mine and his windows up three cars ahead of me.

My grandfather smoked cigars.
He died 20 years ago.

When I walk into the house he lived in, I can still smell them.
(just when I walk in the door, then it seems to be gone, or I get used to it quick)
White Owls, IIRC.
