A critical take-down on the new high-end Mac Mini

Granted, a lot of this was over my head, I didn't understand many of the terms he was using, and wasn't sure if his graphs were "longer is better" or "shorter is better."

But if I'm hearing it correctly, this is no Mac Pro, and substantionally slower than the iMac Pro and other units.

NOTE: he spoke about attaching a graphics card on the outside. I had no idea this was a thing, and a possibility.

I had no idea this was a thing, and a possibility.

eGPUs have been around for awhile, mainly on PCs if I recall correctly.

It's now possible on the mini because of the Thunderbolt 3 port. But from what I've seen the Apple/BlackMagic eGPU is somewhat limited in performance or performs with a small range of apps. And I don't think the cards in it can be upgraded, unlike some other eGPUs.

I guess it's WAY over your head - this was a positive review. Yes, it's not as good as a $3000 MBP or the $5000 iMac Pro, but it's pretty awesome for the price and that was the gist of the review.

Assuming the drivers exist, you can also put a PCIe graphics card in a Thunderbolt to PCIe box.

And for much less than the Apple/BlackMagic box.

A little harsh, but the mini is impressing a lot of tech reviewers.

It's also not the modular Mac that's been demanded.

But it it seems to be a really competent box.

"its fast" -- which I think is all about the flash drive.

$2500 for the version he got and he thinks thats OK. ugh.

...And run your lovely 16-lane card at Thunderbolt's max 4-lane speed.

eGPUs are getting cheap enough to mess around with at the hobby end of the spectrum and vs Intel native graphics they're killer. In enterprise/pro environments, they can only fill some very small niches.

It is sad that the CPU slows down so much because they didn't put a decent cooling solution in it. Other than that, it's a competent though overpriced machine.

The most recent 8th generation Intel NUC has a dedicated GPU (i7-8705G, 4 GB Radeon RX Vega M). Current price is about $965 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.

Hate to say it, but this could almost be Apple's slogan for all their Macs these days.
