NASA begins work to build new supersonic jet

NASA’s mission to revolutionize air travel has taken a significant step forward as the space agency starts building its X-59 QueSST supersonic jet.

The X-59 airplane is dubbed by some as “the son of Concorde” and is being manufactured, on behalf of NASA, by security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin.

NASA plans to publicly test its technology in Texas in November 2018 — in order to ensure that its prototype really will be barely audible when it crosses the sound barrier.

Creating a supersonic aircraft that doesn’t produce sonic booms would be a game-changer for aviation. Before being taken out of service, Concorde’s speed was restricted over certain land routes because of disruptive sound waves.

If NASA’s experimental project works, it should help make supersonic flight more economical.

For those of us not familiar with the initialism: NASP

With Lockheed Martin involved, it will fly at half the speed and cost twice as much.

I’m hoping it will be eclipsed by Musk’s BFR scheme.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Supersonic passenger aircraft likely will fly considerably higher than 60,000 feet:
