USB Wireless N card for iMac?
Posted by: C(-)ris

Has anyone seen any wireless N cards that work with Macs? I've got a G5 iMac and I just put in my order for the AppleTV. The G5 iMacs only have wireless G so it looks like I am on the hunt for a USB wireless card. I would prefer something that works with the airport software, but if nothing exists then I guess third party drivers will have to work. Has anyone seen one?

How would you get the iMac to use the USB connection rather than the built in connection? Can you turn off the internal airport card in Network?

On the original question, I thought "n" was not official yet, regardless of the fact that Apple will be shipping.

Don't ask who the bell's for, dude. It's you.

I assume the iMac would recognize the USB device as just another network connector like other Macs w/ other devices, and yes, select accordingly in the Network control panel...

now back to the Patriots-Chargers game...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

sscutchen, you are correct -- "n" is not final yet. HOWEVER, it's become obvious that any minor changes to the draft "n" standard they MIGHT make next year can be patched via software/firmware, so full "n" speed ahead, cap'n!

My advice -- sell the G5 while you still can and order a C2D iMac.

how about waiting until you get the itv and then see if g works?

No, it's not hard to know -- because Apple doesn't control nor did it invent the "n" spec.

No, it's not a guess -- the draft "n" specification is published here:
[grouper.ieee.org]

The draft spec was approved almost exactly a year ago:
(this article also discusses speed and compatibility etc)

Because the question has already been answered: "g" will work fine, but NOT for streaming HD video -- too much bandwidth required (actually, I doubt you'd get a quality experience even streaming SD TV over 802.11g).

Thus the need for "n."
