Was AT&T, is Cingular, will be AT&T again?

This has happened with my home phone, cable and again with my cell phone.

This has to be a thought out thing by the big corporations, but I don't get it. Are brands like AT&T, SBC, GM and the likes that strong that it doesn't matter what they are selling or who is actually selling it?

Can someone explain how this continues to be plausible?

As I understand it Cingular bought AT&T, then a larger company bought both of them and is going back to the AT&T name. My AT&T then Cingular phone now says "Welcome to AT&T" again." Of course I am usually wrong.

I think SBC owns Cingular and AT&T. There is even a lawsuit against Cingular for phasing out the AT&T brand name. It is in the news if you search for it.

This is a SBC/BLS/AT&T merger...

SBC first and BLS recently....AT&T owned some Cingular and got the rest with the merger.....we have discussed that the Cingular logo will remain kinda' intack with some modification for a few months and then AT&T will be the only logo and name.

Humpty Dumpty has been put back together again.

Hoping for 2 improvements from the new AT&T, so I can buy an iPhone:
1. Better coverage (like Verizon in my area)
2. Get a North American Rate Plan, so I don't have to pay roaming charges in Canada.
Both are deal killers for me.

Does anybody else still have a cell phone plan that dates to US Cellular, which became AT&T, which became Cingular, which became AT&T?

I still get 1100 minutes, plus nights and weekends, for $40 a month. But it's on analog, and they're phasing it out.

Does anyone know of a way to keep such a legacy plan across 3 changes of company ownership? They want to "upgrade" it to 400 minutes for $40 with a current phone.

Some upgrade.

I was with AT&T and I liked it because of the customer sevice. When Cingular took it over everything went to hell. I got lots of minutes plus free evenings and weekends beginning at 7PM. It was crazy because I didn't want to let go of my plan but the connections and customer service sucked way bad.

Due to continued problems with (intelligence challenged folks at) Cingular, I have now SWITCHED to T-mobile. I get 1500 anytime nation-wide minutes for $40. I pay $20 extra for unlimited Blackberry use. I got my 8700 Blackberry (before there was a Pearl) for free by buying it from letstalk.com. At that time (in June 06) I was able to get a one year contract.

Perhaps now that it is under the AT&T badge again things will improve but I am very happy to be with T-mobile, especially because I got the BB for free and on a 1 year contract.

My 1 year contarct will be up by the time the iPhone comes out, but unless things have changed, I expect that not only will the phone be $500 but the data plan and special e-mail plan will add up to a massive monthly bill. I hope that when the iPhone starts to ship to Europe that we will be able to get it unlocked so I can use it with T-mobile.

Wait, if US Cellular was bought out, why is the White Sox stadium still called US Cellular Field?
