Mast stable version of old Mac os..classic?
Posted by: Kraniac

I'm giving my old G3 to a friend and I want to wipe and re-install the OS. I have the last version of classic installed and I find it to be more unstable than previous versions. (maybe it's me or some extension issue, dunno) I have heard that that 9.2.2 or whatever it was...was more flaky than previous versions of 9.

Any of you guys have a take on this? Which version you prefer?

Kind of sad for me to part with this old paint, it's been a very good machine.

either 9.1 or 9.2.2

9.2.1 or 9.2.2 has a much better Finder, and the finder is quite a bit faster when you are working with huge directories (like a folder with hundreds or thousands of pictures for example) And the Firewire drivers, and the ability to work with DOS formatted FW drives is better under 9.2.x

What Racer X says. If 9.2.2 is unstable for you, you probably have an extension conflict. My beige G3 with 9.2.2 is as stable as my albook with Tiger (though I do shut it down daily, which I don't do with Tiger).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

My first response, I swear, was to say 7.6 (which was the last system I remember that gave me the least problems before I went OS X). Of course, the last time I had a Mac running under pre-X I was on 9.2.1 I think on all the Macs I used & administered. So I'd have to agree with the 9.2.2 recommendation.

9.2.2 was like an old friend. I hated to give it up. Classic does not do anything for me.

yeah i know classic isn't the old OS, dont really know what to call the old OS..the Old os, THE old OS. whatever. I probably have an extension issue with the thing based on your re's. I remember installing an audio editing program in the thing, quite a while ago ,and it fritzed me extensions. Went through the old process of disabling stuff and I think i screwed it. Soon after, I migrated to OS 10 and a diff machine and never resolved that old conflict me tinks.

6.0.7 - no multifinder!

6.0.8 --- with better LaserWriter support! I never saw my folks's Mac SE w/SuperDrive ever crash with 6.0.3

Man, this is one type of thread we sure don't see much of anymore.

yep, got a firend who needs to run an old scsi scanner and a program that he designs his paintings in...some old software that wont act right on his current box. something like that. He needs the g3 so it gets a good home. In a couple of weeks he'll probably have the case covered with Elvis Presley bumper stickers. this thing is mazed out with memory and has a USB card and it's actually very functional for lots of stuff these days. I used it regularily until about 6 months ago. end of story.

I've got the original 8.1 mac disk but i need to figure out how to get it back up the 9 versions. I did it for free before but I cant remember how.

I will concur with 9.2.2...and 9.2.1 was fine too (but might as well go up to 9.2.2 if that is the case). With that said...8.6 has been very stable - and I say that because of a web server I have that is still running, for many years, a heavy-traffic site utilizing WebStar, Lasso, and several FM databases! lol

Just haven't had the time to upgrade and shift everything over to newer versions.

Years ago I would only run OS versions that had a 6 in them.

6.0.5
7.6.1
8.6

For MacOS 9, I've been happy with 9.2.2
