I'm late to the "Pro" Mac scene as of late, my last pro was a MDD. I picked up a 4,1 at Goodwill a few months ago. I initially added some drives, later a video card, and tonight added a BluRay drive I had hanging around. What an amazing user friendly device. All I needed was a phillips head! If it didn't require de-lidded CPUs I would have done that too.
Next project is a battery replacement on a late '13 MBP, a little bit more involved. The OWC kit includes gloves and safety glasses.

The Mac Pro is my favorite Apple design. It's just a pleasure to work with.

Thanks, 1st thing I did was upgrade to a 5,1. I added an RX560 which works great on Mojave.

You can use lidded processors, it’s just a little bit more tricky to install. There are de-lided install kits out there. Do an Internet search for 4.1 upgrade.

Heat spreading caps on top of the processors. I wouldn’t recommend the lidded upgrade route. I ruined a logic board and processor trying that. DeLidding the processors wasn’t too hard. I was successful doing 5 sets of processors.

As I recall, if you are upgrading a single CPU Mac Pro you don't need de-lidded processors. The single socket boards and heatsink are set for processors with lids.

I had a PowerMac G5 back in the day; loved that thing re/expandability and ease of upgrade. I really miss that about Apple.

Oh; it also made for an excellent space heater.

Owned that beautiful aluminum beast for almost 10 years. What a thing of beauty. First time you open that side door, and see how perfectly it all fit. Just gorgeous. And what an easy thing to upgrade. Loved that machine.

Love my MacPro trashcan just as much, but as Apple themselves have noted, it's quite stuck in a corner as far as upgrading.

I'm one of the few out there looking forward to seeing what new MacPro they come up with. (but I do have my eyeballs on the new Minis as a possible next replacement).

Trust me you are not the only one.

I really hope they bring back the old case, or at least something just as simple from an user accessibility standpoint. Make it space grey and call it a day.

I was all set to get a 4,1 and upgrade it, but I got an awesome deal on a 12-core 5,1 a few years ago. Best Mac I've ever owned, although the 3,1 it replaced was a work horse for over 7 years.

I would love to see the old Mac Pro case brought back, or something very similar.

One large concern for me would be the minimum OS that anyone buying a new Mac Pro would be forced to use. I have no plans to install Mojave on anything that I currently have. If Mojave didn't force conversion to APFS on SSDs, I'd be more inclined to at least try it out on a test system.

It's beyond ridiculous that those chuckleheads at Apple could not get their collective fecal output together three or four years ago to produce something useful.
