I have a G-drive 1 tb that just bit the dust, so I'm going to be buying a new drive. Are there any that you would recommend or conversely those you would avoid? Thanks in advance.

All drives fail, not if, but when. ;) Assuming the gdrive was prob a pretty old anyway?

If you are just going with 1 TB again, Id go with a portable drive. Less heat, less noise, less power.

IMHO, brand is irrelevant.

I would probably avoid anything that spins. SSD all the way!
And no external power supplies.

back up - seagate or wd buss powered 2.5".
I bought a 2G seagate for $60 in Feb, that was rec'd by someone here. It's quiet and has been put through a decent amount of work. I use it for CCC once a month, for 2 partitions; or when the moon aligns with Jupiter. And backing up music, film and TV rips, as a separate pass on a 3rd partition.

working - glyph studio spinner or quality ssd. I have a 5yo 1T glyph that is a daily working drive. Glyph seems to have the bridgeboard design down. I've used them for around 20 years. I have shipped them around the world with nary a blip. US designed and built.
It has an IEC cord not a wall wart. I will not use wall wart drives no matter who's name is on it. Too many bad experiences. I have working friends that have had "G's" drop at most inconvenient times.
I've used avastor, rocstor, & lacie with good results, but I don't own any for the long term.

OBTW, last I recall, in conversation with the Sound Devices (location sound gear; and Video Devices as well), they were spec'ing OWC SSDs for their gear. SD/VD make the most respected location mixer/rec'rs & video rec'rs on the planet. US designed and built.

There is also a WD 120G drive in my brothers circa '99 iMac that I pulled from my old beige. It's still quite happy and regularly used.

I think thats more the case (pun intended) of 3.5" drives.

2.5" drives are composed of the drive, a small bridge board and thats it.

And yet one of our small Seagate drives crappped out, also. And yes, it was the crappy enclosure.

You can buy an enclosure for $12 on Amazon that is better than what Seagate uses. I guess they just want people to toss the drives and buy a new one, regardless of what is at fault. And those cheap Inateck enclosures are brain-dead easy to open and install a drive into.

HGST is probably the best.

WD bought them, but HGST drives still seem to last longer than others on average, and that includes the whole WD line.

So, I suggest replacing your G-Drive with another G-Drive.

I just picked up a 2.5" HGST 1TB drive in the clear enclosure during the last OWC Garage Sale.

I've been getting Toshiba 3.5" drives: so far, so good. Before that, I stuck to HGST until they phased out the old models in favor of NAS drives and much more expensive enterprise models. The NAS drives should be fine for use in external enclosures, though. I have one of them in an OWC enclosure.

Why even worry about using an enclosure? Why not just use a dock which will function with multiple drives?

Is the use of a dock no longer in favor with techies? A dock can be used with multiple drives unlike an enclosure.

Poor quality bridge boards can fail, and do. The advantage of the 2.5" external drives is not having a PS that can fail, the bridge boards are pretty much the same in both sizes of drives.
