Kraniac, do you have Multiple Users enabled? Try this:

Start the Mac with the Space bar held down. Before it completes booting you'll see the Extensions Manager. Disable the Multiple Users control panel and keep going. Don't disable the Multiple Users extension --- OS 9 needs it regardless.

Oh, that POS!
I removed that CP on all the Mac installs, nothing but trouble.

Are you logging into the computer after turning it on (ie: Multiple Users is active and configured)?

If NO, then just open the File Sharing Control Panel and change the username and password - you don't need to know the previous one. Great security, eh?

If YES, then boot from a System Software CD (any one that works with your Beige G3 - OS 8.1 thru 9.2.2). Go to your hard drive's System Folder/Extensions and move the following extension files to the Extensions (Disabled) folder:

Multi-User Startup
Security ________ (there are 5 of these extensions)

Now go to the Control Panels and move the Multiple Users control panel file to Control Panels (Disabled) folder.

Restart from your HD and you can access and change the username and password in the File Sharing control panel as mentioned above.

No, OS9 doesn't run right with the Multi-User Startup extension disabled. Just get rid of the CP, as I said.
