August 13, 2018 Google Is Tracking Your Location—Even Without Your Permission, Report Says

Google is tracking your location—even if you wish it wouldn’t.

The Associated Press discovered that even after you turn off location tracking in Google apps running on Android devices and iPhones, the tech giant will still track your location. The AP asked security researchers to evaluate its findings and those experts said that Google is indeed tracking locations after you request it doesn’t.

Ok, so this is five months old. Does anybody have any newer information about this? Has this been addressed/corrected by Apple?

Yes, I'm aware of apps tracking, Privacy settings, Significant Locations, etc. I'm curious about any apps, including Google Maps and apps using Location Services even though they've been shut down as in > Never.

What's the latest on that front.

I *love* SIGs. It's Glocks I hate.

Even with location services disabled for an iPhone app, it can still track your device's unique identifier or create a unique profile for the device and user and can get the device's rough location from the IP address or cell tower. The only way to deal with that would be to delete the app. Without a jailbreak, you can't block all outgoing communications from the app, only its use of cellular data.

(The one thing that I really miss from the days when I used a jailbroken phone was the firewall app that let me selectively block trackers.)

Don’t use it if you don’t like it? Easiest way to not be surprised is to assume everything is always tracking you unless your are using an encrypted service on a burner device.

Most of the carriers sell your location data first. Google/Android is secondary but might have more of your personal data/cookies. Not sure how accurate the story was, or how easy to do it in smaller cities, but the local ABC channel had a story about how a stalker can buy access to your continuous location for about $300.
