Ethernet network (cable modem) with an OS10 machine and an OS9.2 machine

These guys, OS9.2 and OS10, are not playing nicely together.

Is there a way to get an os 10.3.9 machine to talk to a 9.2.2 machine? I cant' get it to work..connected via ethernet in a cable modem network...It's smooth in the browser..I get the password window after typing the afp # and then the password is rejected and it says log in might be disabled and some other crap that I've tried.

Anyone have the magic combo for getting these two machines two share?

Why do people use passwords on macs? they work just fine without them.

ps: My macs didn't work with my router at first...I set the router up on the PC but the macs would screw things up after about 30 min. For some reason setting the name on the macs to a diff name from the PC setup worked perfectly. My PC router install was set up under a name for the channel (all the pcs in the house access it) and the macs just use Linksys and are perfectly happy. Everything works fine now.

Is AppleTalk turned on on the OS 10 machine?

If not, they won't talk.

Is file sharing set up and turned on on the OS 9 machine?

If not, they won't talk.

What elmo3 said.

What is between the cable modem (CM) and the Macs (X & 9) ?

(a) nothing
(b) hub
(c) switch
(d) router

If (a) or (d), be sure that the CM or the router will pass AppleTalk Protocol packets.
Most (all?) Buffalo Technologies, and some (newer) Belkin routers will handle ATP.
Linksys, Netgear, some others don't. Hubs don't care. Switches should not care, but may.

Do the Macs each plug into the CM or (whatever) ?
(a) yes
(b) no
...(b1) CM -- ? -- X -- 9 . X can be set up as a router.
...(b2) CM -- ? -- 9 -- X . Here there be dragons!

Yeah Im using a router...I've had 3 (mac) machines on it for a long time. everything working ok.

K, I'll check apple talk on the OS10 maching, pretty sure that it's off.

Yes, file sharing is turned on on the 9.2 machine

...Sorry, I was bleary last night and I typed "cable modem" instead of "router".

AppleTalk doesn't have to be on for the two to communicate with each other, you can communicate over TCP/IP. In the File Sharing control panel on the OS 9 machine make sure to check the box where it say Allow Connections over TCP/IP (or something like that). I've got AppleTalk disabled on all our machines and they share files just fine. File Sharing using TCP/IP instead of AppleTalk rules out any problems with routers or wireless card that won't pass AppleTalk packets.

Not sure what's wrong with your setup, but I've had no trouble getting my 9600 running 9.2.2 to work with my OS X machines.

Do you use the same user name and password on both machines? Can we assume you set up a user name and password in the Users and Groups control panel, and configured TCP/IP and network settings correctly on the OS 9 machine?

This shouldn't be difficult.

Same here, it should work, I do it all the time.

Sounds simple, but double check your login/passwords, their spellings, etc.

And no, Appletalk does NOT need to be on if you're sharing over TCP/IP.
