Very awesome story. Is the Pam in the article you, by chance?

I’ve hiked some of the trails myself years ago. I once carried my 2 year old daughter up the Ammonoloc Ridge trail to the top of Mt. Washington in early August and we ran into a strong snow event even then. Of course we had down clothing with us and it was short lived. We ended up riding the cog railway down that day.

Good story, well written. That area is where I started my backcountry life; I did trail work on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail as a teenager.

Holy fsck.

I can't begin to convey the intensity of that story.

Truly badass in the best possible sense of the word.


Aside from the rescue, I don't know if I could carry all that kit for a walk in the park, let alone up and around a mountain in blizzard conditions, and being responsible for another soul.

Finding out later that it was a suicide attempt and not a dumb hiker really got to me. We usually know that the person we are looking for is despondent. That doesn't mean we should assume otherwise if not briefed as a despondent. In this story the woman happened to be a sar person. But anyone can come across a situation where the subject is despondent. And not know it!

I was reading the beginning and wondered how this skilled, VERY well prepared woman would end up in need of rescue. When I hike solo, I always pack expecting the worst, but I don't try to hike Mt Washington in October. That area is famous for extreme weather changes as you hike higher.

I was wondering if he was suicidal instead of hyperthermic and was getting worried. What if he really wanted to do it and she was getting in the way?

The best part of this story is that it's inspirational. I really don't think I would have followed that path in the snow at that point. I think I've read that there is cell reception somewhere along the trail - I probably would have called it in instead. But I will remember this story forever and it might make me think twice if I ever encounter that situation.

Whatta woman! I really enjoy stories of immense difficulty overcome in the wilderness and this one hits it outta the park.

I am still digesting it, but I wrote in part:
"It's about our own grit, determination, and standards, but also how those affect others. Caring comes in many forms."

For me at least, this story has a number of levels. It brought up a lot of emotion. Part of why I'm still sorting it out. There is much there that is "ordinary", turned extraordinary. It gives me some hope for all of us.

Thanks for this...it actually made me tear up....glad the story had a happy ending, not many good stories out there.
