AppleTV remote...junk

I know we've all discussed what a crappy design this remote is but for crying out lout I'm on my 3rd remote and the remotes cost about half what a new AppleTV costs. I think I'll just get a generic remote. I'll miss that microphone though.

There is a silicone Skin on Amazon that helps a lot.

You no longer have to guess if you hold it right, it makes it easier to hold (the thing is damn too thin and slipper) and adds some protection if you drop it.
But I agree that naked the remote is junk. Apple should be ashamed of putting out such crap.

Yeah, ditto. And when it's not convenient to use (dammit, kids; where did you put it?), I use the app on my iPhone to control it.
And ditto also space-time's recommendation of a remote cover; I got this one. Helps a lot.

I got an older Apple TV at an auction a few months back, but it didn't come with a remote. Unfortunately, you can't use the iPhone app without first connecting to the same network, which I couldn't do without the remote! They I found out that the remote that came with my Macbook like 12 years ago actually works with the Apple TV! But as I said, it's an older model (2nd gen) that only does 720p, and has no internal storage. I'll probably sell it.

I have the rubber skin also. Big help for holding the remote. The first remote just stopped working one day. The second has an unresponsive touchscreen.

How can you tell which way you hold it in a dark room?
I see that and I raise: How can you tell which way you hold it in a well lit room? Serious question. No matter what I do, I end up picking up the wrong way half the time.
second Q: if the remote was idle for a long time, does it respond? mine does not, I usually use the volume buttons to wake it up, then it works.
But even then, it is not as responsive as it should be. Yes, the damn thing is fully charged.

I was an early adopter on the ATV4. Never had any problems with the remote - zero.
If you don't care about the Siri, the old silver remote used on ATV2 and ATV3 works just fine and it's simple to determine which way to point the remote.
FYI Apple still sells the silver remote for $20 and you'll find clones Amazon for $6-$12
