Tim Cook admits prices might be a tad high for iPhone

During today's earnings call for the first fiscal quarter of 2019, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked whether he thought that the pricing of the iPhone XR, XS, and iPhone XS Max was too high.

In response, Cook said that while he didn't feel that was as much of a factor in the United States, it was an issue in emerging markets.

The iPhone XS is priced the same as the iPhone X at $999, while the iPhone XS Max, a new device, was $100 more. The XR, at $749, was priced to be right in the middle of the entry level iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models. Cook said that's a "pretty small difference in the United States compared to last year."

In emerging markets, however, iPhone pricing was an issue due to the strength of the dollar. Foreign exchange rates amplified the pricing increases leading to weaker sales. Cook says that in January, in some locations, the company has absorbed all or part of the currency movements compared to a year ago, getting closer to local price compared to a year ago.

Cook in an interview with Reuters earlier today said that Apple is lowering iPhone prices in some emerging markets.

In developed markets, like Japan, a lack of subsidies has also become a major factor. Even in the U.S., where subsidies have been phased out for several years, Cook said that a person who last purchased an iPhone 6 or 6s for $199 when subsidies were still in place may be reluctant to upgrade to a device that costs upwards of $749 without subsidies.

Apple is working to address the subsidy issue with trade-ins and installment payments.

Apple taking my Wife’s 6S plus 64GB for $250, made the difference of her upgrading now vs later.

and the size factor -- I don't want a tablet size phone. A full-screen SE would be perfect

Wife switched from an SE to an XS last week. She's adapting pretty quickly. (Employer picked up the tab, so nothing out of pocket.)

I think it is a mistake not to have an SE sized phone for $400-500.

That's a dealbreaker for me. The home button, not so much.

This makes the subject line completely meaningless to me.

Put me down for an XSE.

5/SE size - check
full screen - check
Home button - check
Touch ID - check
earphone jack - don't care
wireless charging - don't care

I expect 5yrs out of my SE same as my 5S. It may top out at some iOS before that, but I'll struggle until the battery taps out if there's no smallish 'Phone before then. If I can get a new battery then, so much the better.

Not sure why so many get stuck on this: it's not like you can't use plug-in headphones, just need the different connector. I'll take the water resistance over an older-style headphone jack any day! But maybe I'm just clumsy. confused smiley

Just this morning my wife shipped my old iPhone 5 that I bought from a member on this forum in Dec 2014. I paid $200 for it, put a $10 battery in it 2 years ago and sold it for $55 on eBay. So, my net cost on 4 years of use of the iPhone was $145. Pretty good, I'd say!

It will be interesting to see how long my new-to-me mint (and it was) 6s lasts. I paid $198 for it, including the new $29 Apple battery. Apple is offering $200 in trade but I think not. Now, if they drop the XR price to $600 and still offer $200 for the 6S it might make me jump. I am not holding my breath for that to occur, however.

If Tim asked me, I'd simply tell him I don't know any logical reason to upgrade from the 6S.

"More speed" was always what I was after since I started computing in the early 90s. Once SSDs arrived, I've been pretty much satisfied.

I am excited to see if/when a new Mac Pro comes out. I'd like to see if video compiling is a lot faster. That could make me open my wallet.

I got $40 from Amazon for my 5s in September. I purchased a used SE for $119 after trade-in. Apart from the absence of a case and a battery health at about 95%, the SE could have passed for new. Great form factor, MUCH faster - an excellent use of $119.

....the issue for me is I often listen while recharging the iPhone.....you can't do this simultaneously now (although there are adapters out there) without use bluetooth earbuds (and why buy new bluetooth when one already has perfectly good headphones with connectors).......never needed waterproof.....

I traded in my 5s in when my daughter got her XsMax and it got discounted by $150 at Verizon. Verizon guy said that the 5s was the oldest model they'd accept for trade-in.

How many adapters get lost, or aren't there when you need it? Its a personal choice for me.
