I've considered that issue. It's less of a problem with USB-C/TB3 than it was, and as a desktop computer that's less of a problem than it would be with a laptop. Four USB 3.1 USB-C ports and two USB 3.0 USB-A ports... Get it with 32GB RAM and the base internal SSD. Get/build a tiny 1TB M2 SSD in an external enclosure and tape it to the side where you can't see it.

I'm considering the i5/16GB/256G Space Grey (they made the Gold into a Rose Gold but call it Gold).

But it's only $40 cheaper as a refurb. Not much of a savings.

This is exactly what I have done/am doing. Got the i7 mini w/512GB SSD. Swapped in 32GB ram and just ordered a 1TB Crucial MX500 m.2 and USB C enclosure. Should arrive tomorrow. Mini mounted to underside of desk and SSD will velcro up next to it.

Now, truth be told...I am not blown away with mini so far. Thought it would feel faster all the way around. Still relatively new though so we'll see.

I'm more concerned about being locked into Mojave.

I saw the Mac mini as a possible alternative to a MacBook. I'm rarely mobile but when I need to be, I need to be. But a Mac mini would actually fit the bill to a certain extent (small, portable, can hook up to almost any HDMI monitor or a quick trip to Walmart and an $80 display will get me through in a pinch).

Storage is the issue, though. I know I could just get something with the RAM I need (minimum 32GB) and a big enough internal drive to run the system and store apps.

I know I could always get a quick external with enough storage for my needs. I have a few of OWC's mini Elite Pro Duals ( [eshop.macsales.com] ).

Also makes me really wish OWC made the miniStack with a 2.5" drive RAID option. Hint, hint.
