If you were going to buy the Star Wars movies, which edition would you get and where would you buy it?

If this was a few years back, I would have bought the Blu-Ray. However, I don't think our BD player even works anymore, nor do we plan to buy another. I'm thinking of a digital download, but then I'm likely locked into whatever service that has it. I'd probably go with Amazon.

And then there's a matter of which version to get. Some say to get the pre-2011 version. I'm not a purist. This is mainly for the family to watch.

Laserdisc transferred to DVD.

Or just download the deconstructed editions.

I am a purist - there's only one version that you should get:

Alternately, if you have some kind of PVR/DVR just record them and rewatch them?

If you buy them as a digital download you might as well just "rent" the stream instead, you'll save a few bucks up front, and if you don't think you'll watch them often you don't have to worry about their availability on different services going forward.

I'd be VERY surprised if Disney didn't pull this and all their other content back from other services' availability and hide them away in their own walled garden service in the coming months. Then we'll have the joy of having Disney content only available for a limited time from their vault, whenever they choose to let you watch it.

Technically, if you own a copy in some format, this should be legitimate:

I was looking at the Despecialized Edition, but didn't see an easy way to play them without burning a disk. Though, it seems like I could just download the MKV? That said, the kids will probably want to watch them at some point and I'd like to make that easier than using a computer and VLC.

You haven't got a way to play video to your TV from a computer yet?

No HDMI cable/adapter? No Airplay? No Chromecast? TV won't play MPEGs from a USB flash drive?

You haven't got a way to play video to your TV from a computer yet?

I do, but I want something that will be easy to use with a remote - either Windows Media Center or the Fire TV Stick. I may have set up MCE to to play MKVs. I'm trying to find a download link for the despecialized edition.

My son still watches the non-special editions on the DVD set. If you have a Roku with a USB port, it will play mp4s and mkv files. DL and put on a usb stick, and ta-da...

IV, V, VI, Rogue One, maybe The Last Jedi. Just skip the prequels. They suck and bring nothing to the experience.

I know you said you wanted streaming, but are you sure you don't want to just own the physical discs?
$8-10 on eBay for original trilogy on DVD.

Very happy with it. Updated as new material becomes available; I believe they've gone through at least one video quality update. All at no additional fee.

Ditto re/ROGUE ONE (a household favorite) and SOLO (which is more fun than you've heard).

They will, eventually. They can't for the time being re/Turner (through 2024). Everything else is going to be Disney+ exclusive.

Most everything else is coming home, per se. Can't blame them; want some more return on that $4B investment.

Was in the same boat for years but after the multiple editions, continual format upgrades, I decided I was done with it. Sold them all & got the full iTunes spate when it was on sale (when they first dropped). As noted above; very happy with it & no regrets. YMMV.

You haven't heard of Movies Anywhere?

All my digital movie purchases are available across iTunes, Amazon, Google, Vudu except for Paramount releases (I believe it was the one studio holdout).

As this was pioneered by Disney (Disney Anywhere), I think this will stick around for quite a while.

Of course at some point Disney will do a 4k re-release of the Star Wars Franchise... so you'll all have to rebuy again.

All my digital movie purchases are available across iTunes, Amazon, Google, Vudu except for Paramount releases (I believe it was the one studio holdout).

As this was pioneered by Disney (Disney Anywhere), I think this will stick around for quite a while.

Of course at some point Disney will do a 4k re-release of the Star Wars Franchise... so you'll all have to rebuy again.

At the time of my post, I had not. Looks like that will solve that one issue, though it looks like you can't convert discs to digital copies via Vudu.

Yes, but.

The bonus disc in the 2006 individual movie DVD releases contain the original theatrical versions--but those discs kind of... suck. They aren't full-resolution (not even 480p), but rather letter- and pillar-boxed digitizations of the Laserdisc releases. If you absolutely have to have official DVDs, that's the only way to go. But honestly I don't recommend them.

.....way back when there was no dvd versions [ member when George Lucas did nothing for years and years ].......there were people on Ebay selling bootleg transfers......still have mine.....

I have a SVCD version of the original trilogy that my wife bought me one year before the Dvds came out. It was an official release in some foreign country in the Far Easr. They have Han shooting first.

I don't have either the Amazon or Google version, so I do not know. I'm happy with what I've got, however, and it satisfies the craving to watch the series from time to time.
