Flax seed oil vs. Fish oil

spinoff discussion from the Target deal on Fish oil. . .

the discussion at fatwallet evolved into the benefits of either.

Just a snippet:

There is some debate about the correlation between flaxseed oil supplements and prostate cancer. Here is a link to read more:

I believe the gist of it is that the flaxseed oil can become toxic to the body if exposed to heat, light, and oxygen. I think the general recommendation is to get your flax via natural sources, rather than from flaxseed oil supplements.

"ALA is very fragile to destruction by light, oxygen (air), and heat, and must therefore be protected from these destructive influences. If this is not done, ALA molecules are changed from natural and beneficial, to unnatural and toxic. ALA is destroyed about 5 times faster than LA, the n-6 EFA."

what do y'all think?

Well, the prostate thing isn't a concern to me smiling smiley, but I buy my Flaxseed oil in bottles. They do have to be refrigerated and are dark to keep out the light. I know you can't heat it, but you can use it on top of vegetables and salads and such.

As I said yesterday, I like to use it like you would olive oil and put it on my toasted bagel in
the morning. I like the way it tastes. I'll have to read about the breakdown thing. I hadn't heard that it was that fragile before.

Charles Myers a world class medical oncologist whose specialty is prostate cancer advises against flaxseed oil. He also says that you should avoid canola oil at all costs. He does like fish oil.

flaxseed is for people who just can't stand the taste of real seafood. I'd prefer to eat the foods that are rich in the same substances things like fish oil pills, and tiny little seeds are substitutes for. Eat salmon, eat tofu, for cryin' out loud. It's like people who take "Garlique" because they're afraid of the taste of garlic. It's for wimps! Soybeans are good! Especially edamame. And salmon is delicious.

If flaxseed oil is bad for ya I'd hate to be Barry Bonds in a few years. According to him that was a supplement that he was (or has been taking) for years that inexplicably caused him to be massive and hit homeruns without even having to swing the bat.

From what I've read briefly, it's very controversial.

Here's another view: [www.barleans.com]

... for myself, I like the flax capsules, but then... I'm not taking much... and I'm not really at risk for prostate cancer.
