iPhone X cracked! Repair at Apple or 3rd party shop?

Sigh, my daughter cracked her iPhone X after ignoring my suggestion to get a screen protector..

Suggestions on if she should get it repaired at Apple or use a 3rd party shop? The phone isn't under warranty at this point. Oh, and she will be paying for the repair.

She HAS ordered screen protectors already...

An iPhone X screen repair at the Apple Store costs $279.
With this information in-hand, price out what a 3rd party shop or mall kiosk would charge you.

Maybe quadruple check to see if it's still covered under warranty?

Apple. I haven’t found a third party screen as good as the Apple screens.

Yeah, I'm tempted to direct her to Apple, but will price out some 3rd party shops.

The phone is 1.5 years old so the Apple warranty is done, but I probably have a credit card warranty. Though that won't cover accidental breakage this far out.

I was only mentioning warranty as I'm sure a 3rd party repair would invalidate an Apple warranty which isn't a factor here.

Ahhh... so you didn't go for Applecare+ (which covers year 2). If it was my iPhoneX, I would bite the bullet and go with OEM Apple Store repair. Expensive lesson learned. If you go 3rd party ask about their warranty on the repair. As C(-)ris mentioned, the screen they use will most likely not be OEM. It'll be close, but not perfect. Is your daughter the type of person to notice/care?

Too far out but...
Apple has some sort of promotion right now, where they give credit for your phone.
A working X would be worth around 500, and the crack would most certainly take a big bite out of it but, I’d check how much it would be worth towards a XS, or even the XR, at least to be aware.
But anyway...

The phone would need to be repaired before getting the Apple credit/trade in. There is no 'damage value reduction'.

She's not the type that'll notice the difference with a 3rd party non-OEM screen. Her friend has recommended some sketchy repair biz in their college town so let's see ... fingers crossed.

I don’t get it. If you don’t want the high quality screen and accurate digitizer why spend the money on an iPhone X in the first place? Just get a cheap Andriod phone or iPhone 6.

Go with Apple repair.

Something to consider..... After my phone warranty ran out, I switched to phone service provider warranty, they didn’t make a big deal about adding it to the plan. It was $15 a month and it covered the phone for the first repair. Defect, this was after a year. Got a new phone from Apple through them.

To me, spending $1000 on a phone and not tacking on a few dozen bucks for a warranty is like buying a Mercedes and skipping comprehensive insurance coverage.

There was a time when 3rd party Apple repair shops were knowledgeable, honest, respected and sought after. Now they are looked upon as cheap, untrustworthy and sketchy.

Not only that, you have non oem replacement parts. So even if the shop is not sketchy, the parts are not as durable/reliable.
