It's exotic to them.
I have a Cambodian friend who complained that his buddies always wanted to go out and eat Chinese and Thai food. It was exotic to them.
He said "I can get that at home. Going to mcDonalds is exotic for me.

This waiting for hours may have been the case when they first opened but I haven;t seen it lately. I was ion Beijing twice and none of the McDonald's had lines that were several hours. Crowded yes, hardly hours. As for exotic, it is more 'hip" since it is American. They alter the food, it is not exactly like what you get in the U.S.
