Question for Forum Audio Recording Aces

i found a cassette recording of me singing to my infant son 20+ years ago. you can even hear him cooing in the background. i managed to convert it to an mp3 and would like to clean it up a bit as there is a lot of hiss and low level hum.

i have Audacity. what settings might i play around with to make this cleaner? i realize there's a limit to what is possible. this was recorded in the air on my Marantz portable recorder onto a very cheap no name brand cassette.

First, import it as a .wav file, then download the demo of Izotope RX 7, watch some youtube tutorials, and clean it up. Clean up the hiss,; use some compression to raise the lower-level baby sounds, enjoy. I don't use audacity.

Sound Soap worked well for such things. Though I'm not sure if it's still available. Bias, wasn't it?

the cheapo transfer device made it an mp3. should i convert it to wav? audacity could do that.

+1. Get it as AIFF or uncompressed WAV before trying to edit. 48000Hz/16-bit will be fine considering the source, but I would go 24-bit if possible to give more room for leveling.
