There was an article several months back that pointed out that this data center will use twice as much electricity as the new Toyota factory down there.

There was an article on Digg yesterday that pointed out some weird ways to save electricity. For example, if Google.com' s default search page were changed to a black or gray background it would save something like 3,000 MW / year because black requires less energy to display than white. I also read that Google is experimenting with using DC power to supply their datacenters because it reduces the cooling required and increases efficiency.

Huh? Maybe on a CRT, but on an LCD the backlight is always on when the monitor is on. Doesn't matter what color the LCD is displaying.

The software giant based in Redmond, Wash., is looking at San Antonio and at least one other city — Austin — for the center, which would store company data on scores of computer servers, said the officials, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the talks.
Man it would have been nice for it to end up in Austin, that'd been a NICE KICK in Mike Dell's @$$ smiling smiley

True, but much of the world is still using CRTs. In time, it would make little difference as more people adopt LCDs, you're correct. I think that a nice gray background would look better though. I really like the style of Daring Fireball's website. It is much easier on the eyes. Looking at a page that is all white all day is like staring at a light bulb for 8 hours. It is rough on the eyes.
