Tell me about your smart home

We have an Alexa who's smart features mainly involve timers and turning on and off the lights. I'm curious about expanding our setup.

What do you have?

We have smart switches for 3 lights (livingroom, dining room, bedroom) 3 smart outlet plugs for 2 lamps and one fan, can also open or close both garage doors remotely (iPhone, Watch, Alexa). We can control 2 TV's (on/off, change channels, guide, search etc) with Alexa. Looking into a smart ceiling fan.

I have Alexa turn control some lights and thermostat. I also have a WiFi connected washer and drier and I get notified when laundry is done. I get these notifications on my phone and watch, and I think I can enable Alexa to give me these notifications but I never enabled that feature. I have some Wyze cams as well, not sure if Alexa can work with those.

2. Chamberlain MyQ garage door opener.
3. No longer available, Stack Lighting. Motion sensing can lights that can be programmed extensively.
4. EcoBee 4 WiFi Thermostat with Alexa
5. Rachio 8 Station sprinkler controller
6. Digital day/night wall switch to control my Singled Motion sensor exterior can lights( front and garage door)
7. Amazon Fire Cube TV to control one of my TVs

Alexa can but i would think it's only useful if you have a Spot or a Show.

My smart home is pretty dumb. I have Nest smoke/CO alarms and a smart light switch for our porch light. The wife brought home an Alexa device that was given to her as a gift but I deep-sixed it. I don't want always on microphones in my house.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

An Apple Watch, an iPhone, AirPods, a HomePod…all interfacing with various HomeKit-compatible accessories.

Amazon dot, Ecobee, WyzeCam, Ring cams. Waiting for WyzeCam sensors to show up (pre ordered). Regular alarm setup ($20 month). Pentair Scanlogic wireless/App pool controller. Alexa enabled tv remote (Alexa, change input, change channel, start blu Ray, etc). Almost forgot, a couple of Alexa enabled plugs by TP-Link

Insteon to control lights (on, off, and timer functions), monitor doors, smoke detectors and water leakage detectors.

Alexa, which can be used for voice control of some of the Insteon devices.

Ecobee thermostat.

Synology NAS used to record several IP cameras. A couple of Wyze cameras to provide monitoring of areas that don't need to be saved to the NAS. Use one to be able to quickly check that the refrigerator door in the garage was closed. One monitors 3d printer.

HDHomerun Quattro to provide OTA channels to Apple TV's, Fire TV's, tablets. Use Synology NAS as a DVR for the Quattro.

Hmmm I have a window A/C that I can control from my phone. Radiator heat does not lend itself to smart thermostats. The other A/C units are turned on and off manually when we are in the respective rooms.

Standard timer on the plant lights stopped working correctly just this week.

We have an Alexa but rarely have it turned on.

As for lights, it is just so easy to turn on a light when I walk into a room and turn it off when I leave that carrying a phone just to do that does not make sense.

I would love to monitor and control the garage door from my phone to be sure I have closed the door before going to bed as much as anything but it is far enough from the house that I don't know that I can get a WIFI signal out there.

Then there is the sobering problem that it is possible that I am not smart enough to have smarter than me devices.

i use Alexa and a smart plug for my bedside light. i like not having to contort my body to turn out the light at night. in my morning grogginess i have Alexa turn the light on which helps me convince my body that yes, i really do have to get up now.

That’s one thing I like about my smart plug, it has a auto on and off feature in its own software. I have it turn off at 1:00am, my wife hated that I left the light on all night, So I connected the plug.

But, no movies? I mean no good movies? I assume the books and music are good, since there is plenty of crude out there that doesn't deserve a place in any home.

So, you prefer refined over crude? :-)
