I have the need to learn some basic MIG welding. I have two 4 story fire escapes and I want to do some maintenance and improve some of the structural concepts..

I've always wanted to learn to weld and it seems MIG is for me..any of you guy regularly welding?

Need some recommends on equipment and learning resources..found a guy on YouTube that is details things pretty well..

help, recommendations..anything

Local community college for sure. If they are heavy steel you can probably just stick weld them.

My boss taught me how to weld. It's super easy to learn. It's super duper hard to master.

I *love* SIGs. It's Glocks I hate.

If these are rental or commercial properties and not the home you live in, I'd check local regs first. To do repairs to something like a fire escape the person doing the welding may need to be certified. There is a big difference between a welder and a certified welder.

Repairs on fire escapes probably require a certified welder bonded for liability.

Someday I'm going to start a Men's Birthday Party company which rents out space and teaches the birthday boy and ten of his friends how to weld for 6-7 hours, lunch included, no alcohol during shop time.

However, after the shop time: a bourbon tasting, followed by a steak dinner, then maybe strippers (upcharge), who will be termed the Brazin' Hussies.

I did this and recommend it (although I was at least 10 years senior to my classmates). Downside is that we had to go through a general class of all techniques before you could take a second class focused on a specific skill. Spent a lot of time mastering acetylene puddle control and creating a uniform bead, started on a hot rod with a buddy, never finished it and never welded again. I think oxy/gas is pretty much a dying technique now.

For welding probably. But great for cutting unless you can afford a plasma cutter.

Who are you? Ron Swanson?

I took a welding class years ago at the local community college. It was required for my apprenticeship. We had a GREAT instructor who was a former Nascar crew chief and was quite involved in racing of all types when he was a young man. He taught us well, but the welding lab was over equipped so we had decent tools to work with.

That said, I agree with others here. For something like welding fire escapes, use a pro to insure quality work that is up to codes. Heck, I can weld, but I have a friend who IS a pro welder and has a shop with all the goodies. It's much easier to get him to do any welding jobs I have and I know the work will be A-1.
