A friend shot this in Costa Rica and wondered if I knew what kind it was. Looking on the inter webs the closest I've come is a type of Hermit Hummingbird, maybe Straight-billed Hermit. But the SB hermits aren't as brightly colored so I'm at a loss and I have other stuff to do today...

Dang, that’s a beautiful bird.

But no match in my well-worn Birds of North America paperback handbook. But I don’t think it really covers Central America.

Per the Merlin Bird ID app, it might be a Green-crowned Brilliant, or a Rufous-tailed, but neither of these appear to have the orange under the eyes. The white spot behind the eye is characteristic of the Green-crowned.

Your friend could download the app and try also, he might be able to enter better details about where/when he saw it.

Ah, it might be a male juvenile Green-crowned Brilliant. There are Google images with the orange patch, so maybe they lose it as they age, or maybe some just have that orange patch.
