keyboard in dishwasher (follow-up)

original thread In a nutshell: don't bother.

Two in dishwasher.
• older one: dead (as in, nothing works)
• newer one: everything seems to work except period key (yes, the decimal point on numeric keyboard works, so I could use that.)

• Back to using similar looking but slightly inferior Matias clone

Cleaner, but not as clean as I had hoped. If they worked, I was still planning on attacking them with the Formula 409.

Back in the day when people sometimes did successfully run their keyboards through a dishwasher cycle, even then we recommended removing the key caps and running just the key caps through in the silverware bin.

Nowadays, unless you've deliberately sought out a "clacky" keyboard, not even that is an option. Much of the time, removing a keycap will break the fragile plastic scissor-switches beneath it.

I’ve never dishwasher a keyboard. The closest i’ve come is drenched a keyboard with iso alcohol to clean it after spilling a coffee on it. Seemed to clear up the keyboard stickiness.

I've done it many times, both with and without removing the electronics in the innards. Never had a problem. For the latter, let it sit for at least a week face-down before plugging in. Mind you, those were all old-style spring-loaded typewriter style keys, not the chicklet kind that's more common today.

Pretty sure I made this recommendation in the previous thread: magic eraser if clean is your goal.

If you'll need to clean the keyboard routinely (i.e., it's being used in a dirty environment), and regular replacement isn't in the cards ($$$), I'd still recommend the Logitech K310, a washable keyboard.

Yes, I considered the Magic Eraser, too. It's all moot at this point, though.

That keyboard looks interesting, and at least similar in looks to the Apple Aluminum (if not the same "color" scheme). Worth considering next time I need a keyboard. Thanks.

I was trying to remember the big maker of silicone keyboard overlays that were popular around the time of Macworld Expos.

Some had various key codes imprinted for use with Photoshop. Others have various keyboard alternative character combos imprinted.

Some were just clear, designed to keep the crumbs out. I got one for my PB12 and it was excellent.

I don't know if they'd work with new 'Books, and they were never available for a big variety of keyboards.

Don't have one; have clients who have purchased. They like them fine. Granted, their primary need is a cleanable keyboard, not xx words per minute.
