2009 iMac won’t power on

I have no idea what preceded this symptom, since I don’t use this computer. Other Human says it was fussy about turning on recently and now shows no sign of powering on. Any ideas? It isn’t worth fixing, if that means spending anything.

I would try unplugging and leaving for a few hours then plug in and try again.

SMC reset: Unplug, hold the power button in for 10-seconds, release button, plug it back in and try to turn it on.

Mine quit when the video crapped out. Replacement video was over $350.00 on eBay.Too much for that model. I'll send it to you for mail charges, but you know it is quite heavy.

Will be sent from 32136.

Should have mentioned that this was already tried. I don’t mind recycling it but I would want to get the drive wiped somehow. Or removed.

Could be a power supply failure. Happened to my sister with her 2010 iMac. I replaced the power supply for her and it's been fine ever since.

Given the absence of life signs, the power supply seems like the probable culprit. Wish I could just pop the drive out. Why must Apple make these things difficult?

Yeah, not all that difficult getting the hard drive out of a 2009 iMac, especially if the care needed to reconnect things afterwards does not need to be taken.

Yeah, watch OWC's HD replacement video to see how.

If it's just the power supply, as tronnei says, might be worth replacing that and keeping the iMac going.
