Fixed a WD 500 GB External Drive

A WD 500 GB My Book drive purchased in 2011 died. After some troubleshooting, found the 12V DC power brick malfunctioned. Multimeter measured 12.2V, but drive would not spin up. The drive was a 3.5 inch, SATA model. I found a Seagate External enclosure with the SATA-USB2 bridge board in my parts box along with a 12V DC power brick. Moved the drive over and everything now works. Files on the hard drive were intact!

That Seagate enclosure is not likely to be very robust.

Not an issue - the drive is connected to my XBox 360 and holds games but not saves.

Good save. But interface boards can go bad and take attached equipment with them. So a suspect interface board is a risk even if not a high one.

I trashed the WD 12V power supply AND the WD bridge board.
