Hi everyone,

Against my wishes, one of my employees opened up the Mac App store on his machine and accidentally hid a software update. Now we can't "unhide" it. The machine is running High Sierra. I searched around and none of the solutions offered work. The update in question is the security update Apple released today.

Anyone suggestions for a method that will unhide an update will be much appreciated.

Do you have a Time Machine backup you could return to?

Thank you for the link. I'll use that to get the necessary update. Still, though, there should be an easy way to unhide an update. I don't believe Apple has sunk so low that restoring from a backup would be necessary to unhide an update. It just seems assinine.

Well, there are plenty of precedents for such asininity.

Launch the App Store.
From the Store menu, select View My Account.
Sign into your account.
Find the "Hidden Items" section in your account and to the right, click the blue "Manage" text.
A list of hidden installers will appear.
Click the Unhide button to the right.

launch Terminal

softwareupdate -l

does that show it?

Thanks for that command. Tried it and it shows the other update which is waiting for installation but not the security update that was hidden accidentally. Argh!

Hmm.. Apparently that's only for apps. Try this:

Launch Terminal and enter the command:

softwareupdate --reset-ignored

If the command fails, you may have to run it as superuser:

sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored

You will be prompted for your password.

From the man page:

--reset-ignored
Clears the per-machine list of ignored updates.

I guess Apple has fallen a bit but not enough to require restoration from a backup to unhide a simple software update.

Apple is so anal about OS updates that I'm surprised they make it so hard to unhide. I would expect them to send you a daily notification that you have hidden an update, with an "Unhide Now" button.

I would think this incident was just a glitch, some confluence of oppositely rotating vortices, or a rift in the space time continuum or similar.

I think this is the first time I've seen a mention of being unable to unhide something.

Probably the first mention here. Definitely not the first mention elsewhere on the web. Apparently, it's a common problem. Lots of sites offer solutions, none of which worked. Only Altered's resolved the issue.
