Broke My Apple Watch "Screen".....do I need to do a backup before repair?

Playing tennis while wearing my Apple Watch seemed like such a good idea. And I'd done 30 or so times with no trouble....but when my follow-through on a swing carried the edge of my racquet into my watch, things didn't go well!

Fortunately, I have AppleCare for the Watch, so I think I can get the screen replaced for about $69. Do I need to do anything specific before I take it in for the repair? Is there a "Backup" I should do? I know it syncs with my phone every day, so I am under the impression that I don't really need to do anything, but wanted to be sure.

Thanks!

P.S. I read last week that Apple Stores received information that supplies of Apple Watch 3 Series watches is low, and that for certain repairs, they're supposed to just give the customer an Apple Watch 4 Series. I think it's only for the GPS + Cellular models (mine is GPS only), and may not apply, anyway, when it's just a screen repair, but I will still cross my fingers (and will also let them know that if they need to give me a 4 series replacement, I won't be sad, at all).

When you unpair your Watch to get it repaired or replaced, it will automatically make a backup on your phone.

Thanks, RAMd®d! (and thanks, Newt, I guess.....)

I am unpairing the watch right now, and I see that it's doing the backup.
