My mother is trying to find it so she can speak to someone on the phone but having no luck. I've had no luck on Google. It's a 10-digit National Provider Identification.

NPI numbers are specific to individual physicians, not insurance plans.

Every physician should have a unique NPI number.

If you have the physician name, you can look up his/her NPI number:

Organizations can also have NPI numbers. Aetna has an HMO in Nevada with NPI number 1205374485.

Aetna Medicare has its address listed as being in El Paso, TX 79998. There are no NPI numbers listed for any individual or organization at that specific zip code.

There is a downloadable and searchable NPI database, but this month's database appears to be a corrupted file (http://download.cms.gov/nppes/NPPES_Data_Dissemination_May_2019.zip)

A call to Aetna Medicare itself may provide you with the info you need:
1-800-282-5366

Good luck.

Every physician should have a unique NPI number.

She's trying to get it for a hospital/ER. She called them to see if they accept her AETNA Advantage and they told her to call AETNA. The phone tree always asks for the NPI.

She’s most likely calling the wrong number - whatever number she’s calling is almost certainly for providers (doctors, pharmacies, etc) not members. Providers typically give their NPI when contacting an insurance company as part of their identification process. She should look at her Aetna member card and call the number listed for members. If she doesn’t have a card, if she has a web account with Aetna she can log in and find a phone to call, or she can call 800-Medicare and they can get her her Aetna plan’s member support contact line.

It looks like 800-282-5366 as S Pupp posted is valid for Aetna Medicare member services. It’s always best to use whatever number is on your individual card, your specific plan may have a dedicated support line and team.

That makes sense, TL, although she has called the patient/customer number many times. Maybe she got flustered.
