Deputy saves couple from rattlesnake

Happened in Columbia TN, Maury County, south of Nashville.

Two Videos And Article

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) - A cautionary tale as you spend more time out in the woods.

Be aware of your surroundings. You never know what could be creeping right by you.

A Maury County Sheriff’s dash cam and body camera proves it.

There’s a rattlesnake creeping up on the couple. The rattlesnake is one of the few types of snakes that are venomous that live in Tennessee.

When watching the video, you see the snake slither by their heads.

The man got up in a hurry when instructed by the deputy and wasted no time getting out of the way and leaves the woman behind, who didn’t seem too concerned about moving away.

Gotta ask:
1. Why were they laying on gravel?
2. Notice how the guy leaves the woman to fend for herself while the woman is a little slow in moving on out.
3. Police don't think drugs were involved but my guess--they were not exactly sober at the time--or maybe not very smart.

If the rattlesnake was moving toward them, it probably did not feel threatened and likely would not have attacked them.

A cottonmouth, OTOH, would have been a different story.

It is what it is.

Nobody was saved there. The rattlesnake quite clearly slithered past the couple and was headed away from them by the time they were alerted. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive creatures so there would be no situation unless someone had startled the snake.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
