Monthly Microsoft Patch Sneaks In Internet Explorer 7 Installation

For some people who ran Microsoft's January 2007 security and products updates, including me, clicking on the familiar gold shield icon was not much different from getting suckered into opening an e-mail message infected with a virus or a worm Trojan.

That's because unless you checked before you clicked, you were unwittingly giving permission for Microsoft to install Internet Explorer 7.0.

And in too many cases, users are experiencing application crashes or Web site incompatibilities that are rendering IE 7 and your computer useless for Web browsing.

I found that IE 7 totally refused to work on my machine. It crashed every time I launched it, without a single message or word on what caused the problem.

I was left angry and frustrated, thinking that I was effectively cut off from the Web and all my favorite links unless I could figure out a quick way to dump IE 7 and safely restore version 6.

Since as far as I knew, IE 7 had permanently overwritten my IE 6 installation, I felt no initial confidence that I could restore my machine to its previous configuration.

Nope. You can uninstall it and go back to 6. MS gives directions.

At least that's better than Apple...

besides, who uses the little gold shield or the "automatic" button? Doesn't everyone review EVERY piece of software that he puts on his computer?

oh, please. Apple forces Safari and iTunes updates, for example--and refuses to let you use older versions with newer versions of the OS.

It's not "only Microsoft apps". And MS *does* let you go back to IE6.

You might try knowing something about the topic at hand first...

Apple doesn't "force" iTunes updates.
I've disabled them for years.

I'm still running 4.7.1 at home under 10.3.9.

Lots of things do not work with IE7. AOL had a video preview a couple of months ago that was incompatible with IE7.

Going back to IE6 is possible but not simple. You can not use the default installer because it sees a newer version and refuses to continue even if you have uninstalled IE7. I had to download the original version and then apply the patches.

Safari... arguably as many updates to the app are hidden in security updates.

But iTunes...? No.

I've got almost every version of iTunes since 2.0 still sitting on my Mac's hard drive. I've never used iTunes 7 on my computer.

Anyway, what's your point, exactly?

If you're suggesting that sometimes Apple behaves just as reprehensibly as Microsoft does, I might agree. It happens.

And all of my websites that worked in previous versions of Safari have continued to work in whatever version has supposedly been secretly foisted on me.

Elmo: It's fine if you want to skulk under the bridge waiting for a chance to bash Apple in every thread here--keeps us honest, maybe. But how can you POSSIBLY take the original post of this thread as an opportunity to praise Microsoft? Are you insane?

I wonder if the crashes and "web site incompatibilities" are the result of IE7 actually being more standards compliant, but visiting the plethora of craptastic sties purposely munged to work on IE 6 and older ? Either way, I find it a hoot, sorry.

Why not locate your old favorites.html or whatever the Favorites bookmarks file is called nowadays and open then in Firefox and ....

It is not my story. I copied and linked to it. I only use a Mac and usually just Safari.

is IE7 a final release, or a beta?

Almost everything MS releases turns out to be beta when the version number changes. You usually have to see at least a couple patches before they start behaving more like a non-beta software product.

Don't 'cha know that Vista is REALLY XP SP3?
And, as mentioned above, all you need to do to get rid of 7 is use the uninstall in the control panel. You might find an update for ie6 the next time you check. I had a dozen machines with 7 on that the "powers that be" ordained should not darken our doorsteps. Removal, while time consuming was a snap.

To be fair, Internet Explorer 7, is a critical security update. Unfortunately for Microsoft, a similar "look at this webpage and we now own your computer" exploit was similarly discovered after Internet Explorer 7 was released.

The only thing I use IE for is to access Windows Update. I use Opera 9.10 when I need to browse the web on my lone Windows XP box. Also, I turn off scripting for every Zone except for the Trusted Zone. Even stuff coming over my LAN cannot execute ActiveX or Javascript. Makes things much safer.

incognegro,

Yes, Internet Explorer IE 7 is an actual release now, no longer in beta.

Both MS and Apple are screwed regarding automatic updates. If they use it to its fullest potential there will always be a vocal minority who complains about their computer being modified without their consent. If you are that type of person, you should be investigating the crap out of updates before applying them and then you should decide which one(s) you wish to apply on a case by case basis. Automatic updates allows MS and Apple to protect the bulk of their user base with minimal fuss. Most people don't even know that updates need to be applied. They think of their computer as a toaster. No one updates a toaster.

That's why I keep any auto-update turned off when dealing with my own computers. Instead, I check for updates once a week. I then examine each one before applying. Takes a little more interaction, but well worth it.
