I agree with this article, hopefully the Mac operating system can have the same renaissance.

I hope his optimism is accurate.

Maybe they'll rediscover how to innovate on computing workflows as well.

Well, that was refreshing. But let's see how the MBP fiasco works out before breaking out the balloons and confetti.

Yes, Apple has been giving the Mac a little lovin'. Let's see if they convert this momentum for the next generation laptops.

I don't want OS innovation right now.

I want bug-fixes and optimizations and minor GUI tweaks to fix all the stuff that's broken. I want effective enterprise deployment schemes that don't depend on 3rd party hardware and software and learning new scripting languages. And I want my server back.

I'll believe it AFTER I see it AND the "improvements" claimed by Apple truly exist / work as advertised. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me angry villagers smiley

Remember when a base model Mac tower was under 2 grand? And a capable one was @2500? Even with inflation from 2000 to 2019 that $2500 would be $3000

I didnt really find his "optimism" all that optimistic.

Its like the million "concept" designs of apple products over the years -- adding things everyone wants, or think they wants -- and its just a pipe dream.

Inversely, I see mac hardware/software going nowhere. Or incrementally better than it is now.

The new mini isnt anything earth shattering. Its just a progression. iMac, meh. No redesign since 2009. Got an update weeks ago. So long over due. They couldnt even be bothered with a slight update. 5 years for a new MP. And its so over the top its almost laughable.

OSX suffers from the same stagnant spiral. Its looked the same for years.

I will never switch to windows, but i dont have high hopes for Mac innovation.

And its all too expensive -- and thats not changing either.

Like the double mac trashcan

Or an iPad/iMac/MBP mashup

or the new 2020 iMac Pro

none of them would/will go anywhere.

.....Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn

Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
Co learn what to be
Careful before you say 'Listen to me'
Children will listen.....

I am not hopeful.

While I have been impressed before by Marco's writing, Apple is four years late releasing a new Mac Pro. I previously predicted the iTrashcan would be the last 'pro' Intel Mac before it was even released. I expected them to have already switched to ARM based on how things seemed to be going in the 'real computer' product line.

That the Mac Pro isn't already here after making promises so long ago just shows how badly both the ARM design team, and Intel Macintosh design teams have done a faceplant.

Great piece on why Apple released ho-hum Macs (Apple switches computers to ARM?) forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,2057628 by: sekker Date: October 30, 2016

This!
I'm still running an intel XServe, with 10.6.8 Server, for DNS and DHCP (and a minor file sharing role)... because it "just works".
It takes me longer just to get logged in to my Windows 2016 server than to make a DNS change and be DONE on the XServe.

Meh. I'm sure some would argue, but it seems obvious, at least to me, that without Steve Jobs, Apple again continues to release too many mediocre or overly expensive products. Call me when they put out a scaled down Mac Pro normal people (not companies) can afford to purchase or catches up with the rest of laptop manufacturers, as far as price and available ports.

I think this post is relevant to your comments on current Apple laptops.

...when they put out a scaled down Mac Pro normal people (not companies) can afford...

That may or may not happen, but if it it was/is on Apple's list, it wouldn't and couldn't happen while they were working on the new MP.

But it may be that Apple sees the iMac Pro being for the 'those of us that aren't the rest of us but aren't Big Time Pros'.

Hmm, I wonder if 10.6.8 Server will run on a hackintosh, maybe as a virtual machine... I have seen a few 6-core 8th gen Intel low power desktops (essentially a minitower Mac mini clone) for under $400. Drop in a 10Gb ethernet card and it would be a low power performance monster for another 10 years. It would pay for itself with power savings versus an XServe.

Know what's broken? File sharing under 10.14.5.

Beachball blanket bingo.

Trying to roll back a Mac Mini server to 10.14.4 today... what a PITA.

File sharing is broken under 10.14.0 and above. Don't get me started on Open Directory hosing sharing services and the lack of ACL management and broken inheritance (Three words: Tinker Tool System).

...But yeah, the SMB service is especially crash-prone under 10.14.5. Feels dirty, but I resorted to scheduling a nightly server-reboot to deal with that. Mojave sucks. It's just a lousy OS.

If only a nightly reboot was enough - the damn service craps out within a short time after a reboot.

Interesting to hear about Tinker Tool System.
