Finally Migrating to SSD - Any CCC Tips?

I see there's an Advanced tab in the CCC intro screens. Am I fine running "Simple Settings"? Anything I should know / be aware of? I haven't done this in 6 years. "Find and Replace Corrupted Files" is one of the boxes in the Advanced section, but it is unchecked by default. Thanks.

Not unless you can start from scratch as opposed to a migrate?

6 years is a lot of "stuff" to bring over...

How big should that Recovery partition be?

Could I not simply use the old drive as an external for that?

Thanks. Yeah. I just bring it all over. A lot more than 6 years LOL. But 'tis a good reminder to purge!

The Recovery vol is about 600-700MB or so.

It's created automatically when you install a Mac operating system.

If you're cloning then it's not created automatically on the clone-drive. CCC is likely to prompt you to copy the Recovery vol at some point. Just opt to do so when prompted and give it a few minutes to do its thing.

Just make sure there's a Recovery partition on the disk you're cloning from--that tripped me up once.

Thanks - between this and the one from anoymouse1 -- do I need to create a Recovery partition on the SSD? I formatted as Mac OS Exteneded (Journaled) - is this right? Should I stop the operation and create a separate partition on the SSD? Or >It's created automatically when you install a Mac operating system.

do I not need to worry about it and just follow the CCC prompts? I'm running Mavs on the "old" drive - 1TB HDD — don't know if there's a recovery partition on it but sounds like that's automatically installed by Mavs?

I'm going to go up to El Cap on the new drive after I clone the old on and make the transplant.

Sorry, I'm a dummy these days with this stuff.

Don't worry about it. You don't need to repartition your SSD.

CCC usually prompts at the end of the clone operation with a message suggesting that you let it make the Recovery vol on your clone.

If it doesn't do so then there's another way to use CCC to make a Recovery vol, but it's not vital and you can skip it. It

A Recovery vol just gives more options later if you need a bootable vol for troubleshooting or reinstalling the OS.

Okay thanks a lot, mucho apreciado!

I've received a prompt saying there's something wrong with the source drive- read or write error headline followed by:

These errors indicate that there is a problem with this disk, such as media failure, a mechanical failure, an error in the disk's firmware, or a problem communicating with the disk. The severity of the problem is unknown, you can get more detail on the errors by clicking on the affected volume in CCC's sidebar. Read/write error statistics will be reset when you restart your computer.

I ran DU to Verify/Repair a few times before starting CCC. It didn't find anything major, just fixed a few permissions and got that usual .ARDagent thing - I googled that and apparently it's fine to be ignored.

I will have another backup via Time Machine (my other 1tb external HDD) so at least all won't be lost if I have any issues with the new SSD...and in case my previous drive decides not to be bootable.

Run a SMART check on that old boot drive.

You can do so with this app (which has a free trial).

Submit a ticket and include logs (Help -> Report a Problem from within CCC) and we can figure out why you got the error on your source drive. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a corrupt file or two but it's probably no big deal.
