Chewing Gum! Your Thoughts?

My memory may be failing me, but I seem to remember more people chewing gum in the past. I admit that I used to buy gum often when I was a kid. Especially bubblegum. I can't remember the last time I've had any, let alone buy some.

I DO remember being offered gum from a pack occasionally, and Mom always seemed to have some in her purse if I was jones'n.

Plus, commercials. I don't seem to see them as often either. Remember the Doublemint twins?

Do you teachers see it in the classroom? I remember it being verboten when I was in school.

I can't recall the last time I saw anybody of any age chewing gum.

There's tons of it in bulk at Costco, so somebody's gotta be doing something bad somewhere.

I haven't chewed gum since the 70's, probably. I was a Juicy Fruit Man as a kid. I couldn't stand Spearmint and Doublemint. Dentyne was a good change of pace but it was too small. I chewed the gum from baseball card packs but it was awful. Bubble gum was pretty good.

Bubble gum was pretty good.

Bazooka

There was another brand that was pretty good as well, but I don't recall its name. It came in long sticks, and you broke off as much as you wanted to chew.

The chewing gums in Korea were kind of interesting. I liked the Ginseng flavored gum.

I love gum, gimme cinnamon, wintergreen, spearmint, peppermint, just about any flavor.
That said, most times, especially in the car, I have mints now. Not convenient getting rid of the gum after it is spent.

I buy natural chewing gum and chew it after meals (particularity starchy meals) for a minute as a form of dental hygiene. The saliva it stimulates is very effective at removing certain types of stuck on foods.

My mom's purse had either Dentyne or Tic Tacs to keep me happy. Juicy Fruit was a real treat. The last few times I had a piece of gum it lost all flavor in less than a minute. I may as well chew on a rubber band.

I chew gum while bike riding and driving long distances, usually sugarless.

Haven't tried bubblegum in a long time. Tho my favorite was Teaberry.

The thing with me and gum is that once the flavor is gone (which for me only takes a couple of minutes), I thought it was kind of nasty. But I’m not a gum chewer.

My wife used to chew Dentyne a lot, but I can't remember why she stopped. I haven't chewed any in a long time. Just lost the desire to I guess.

My father chews gum frequently (Freedent).
I think he picked up the habit as a replacement activity when he quit smoking decades ago.

Seem to remember a sudden uptick in the number of ads for gum (seemed to be new brands) around ten or twenty years ago. Much of the heraldry was touting how long the taste lasted.

Not a gum-chewer, so never partook. Always assumed that some food-science breakthrough had been achieved regarding longevity and mastications.

It loses it's flavor on the bedpost over night.

I used to buy the big packs at Costco but haven't noticed it at my current store. 5 was the last brand I remember buying.

Been chewin' for many decades. Sugarless. Especially useful in the bicycle and motorcycle riding decades. So I help (barely) deplete Costco's shelves. Dentyne Ice for a blast of flavor.... they advertise that the flavor lasts for 40 minutes, and that's pretty close. For long chews, I use Eclipse, which lasts as long, or longer than my jaws. Its burst of flavor isn't nearly as intense as Dentyne Ice's, but Eclipse has better mouth feel and longevity.

In the 70's, Sugarless Bazooka was the chew of choice, and there was a short little stairway up to the backside of our building, that I used to spit my ABC gum off of from the landing. There was eventually a huge, HUGE pile of gum in the little alcove between the side of our building, and the neighboring building's garages that abutted the little stairway. Since our apartment was right next to the door from the stairway, whenever I was done chewing inside, I'd take a couple of steps out of the apartment to add to the pile. By the time I moved, the ABC collection was around 5,000 pieces, or more.

As to the original premise, for all the chewin' I've been doin', I have never paid attention to other people's use of gum, other than the occasional super-loud-smackers that get my attention. "Normal" chewers (like my family) don't raise any red flags to register, or get my attention. Since I hate smoking, I do notice them, and insist that smokers take some gum from me to curtail their stench breath. Heck, if I had Febreeze w/ me, I'd probably spray 'em.

I chewed gum pretty regularly until my dentist told me I was grinding my teeth at night and wearing them down. Extra chewing becomes a habit and carries over to sleep. Not everyone has this problem but I wish I would have stopped chewing gum sooner.

In the classroom, kids have changed to vaping tutti fruity stuff...

As an adult, if someone offers me gum, I am usually spitting it out within 5 minutes.

The Mrs. still packs gum for drowsy moments when driving or listening to a speaker. I partake when offered, but I rarely seek it out myself. I don't like the jaw-fatigue feeling that builds after the flavor is gone.

As a kid, gum, any gum, was candy that wasn't gone in a few bites.

Juicy Fruit and Dentyne were my gotos. Dad chawed Double Mint, which was ok in a pinch.

But when it lost its flavor, which was sooner than later, especially as I got older, I didn't care for it as much.

I always got some before flying (never had Beeman's) to equalize my ear pressure. It always worked when trying to manually equalize didn't.

On a lark I bought some from Costco, 55gal drum pack. It's little chiclets in a bubble pack. Previously I always kept the wrapper to dispose of the gum when it lost it's flavor.

I use it mainly when walking. I don't carry water, and gum will do until I get to a McDonalds. Or Wendy's. Or Jack in the Box, where I can replenish some of the calories I've burned with a shake.

I'm amazed that nobody (so far) seems to have mentioned either the bubble gum tape or one of my old favorites, Big Red. BIG Red

I do still occasionally chew, if I feel my breath really needs it, after a meal ... or more commonly, some mints. I especially like Jake's Vitamin Candy (coconut blueberry flavor) and Mentos' orange NOW mints.
