We have 2 ttw and a window unit in the house.
Old, noisy, prolly inefficient by todays' standards.
I'm a cranky f'k after 80º and high humidity.

I have a Mitsubishi Slimline system. Had the system installed by an authorized Mitsubishi dealer. Reliable, quiet and programable. Very pleased with the performance.

Daikin user here; for about a decade, if I remember right. Works great here in central AR during the summer months.

Had one issue over the years that got taken care of by the original installer, but it brought forward a nagging problem with it -- it uses tones/beeps to tell you what the trouble is. Both the installer and myself are hearing impaired -- neither of us is deaf, but we both have damaged hearing coupled with tinnitus, meaning the tones were useless.

Ridiculous to use that as a system of error reporting rather than a simple 2-number LCD/LED code screen. Daikin got an earful from my installer regarding that.

Bryant has done well for me. Mitsubishi is one of the top of the line for Minisplit.

....chinese splits are harder to perform.......

Heat pumps are very ineffective in temperature that cold. Some heat pumps have an electric emergency strip built in for heating in low temperatures.

Around here, people still leave their furnaces installed, and below mid 40s, they just turn off the heat pump and run the furnace.

An old buddy of mine lives in northern Ohio right on the shore of Lake Erie. He has 2 mini-splits and he swears he heats his home with them just fine. His other source of heat is a forced air propane furnace. I think he said it came on twice last Winter. I believe some mini-splits have a 20+ SEER rating.

My neighbor owns a small HVAC company. He installed a Honeywell 8000 thermostat with an outdoor sensor on our heat pump that I can set it at whatever I want to turn the outside unit off and when it gets to that number the heat pump cuts off and the oil furnace keeps in. Works great as our heat pump is only a 13 SEER. I think it's set on 30 degrees cut-off. Our heat pump does pretty good down to 30, lower than that and it runs way too much.

Sounds about right.

I have one buddy with a heat pump. Director at one of our local utilities, has a BS in EE. Another buddy has a masters in ME, specializing in thermal "stuff" They screwed around with thermal probes and instrumentation, data loggers and whatnot for weeks setting up the system to cut over and back between heat pump and furnace. I told them to set it to 40 and get back to our drinking. After weeks, they set it to 40. Turns out their experiment was an excuse to drink in the garage with a laptop and the beer bar.
