Just wondering how many folks keep their old iPhones for use as iPod, live camera feed, etc. Just upgraded wife to the new iPhone 8+ (which she loves) and seeing the paltry $25 trade in value for her old version 5 from Apple, got me to thinking about it. I told her to keep it for a music iPod in the kitchen where it works just fine on our wireless network and connects a Bose radio via bluetooth which provides nearly concert hall music quality from her old phone. Seems like a no brainer to me, why ditch a perfectly good device whose main problem is obsolescence and a weak battery. Keeping it plugged into its charger and telling her not to use the internet solves both problems. Just curious how others handle their old phones when upgrading to the latest and greatest or close to it in this case.smiley-signs001

Hmm.
I've sold a few here, sold some to Apple. Whenever I stream music at home I always like to use my actual phone so I can answer calls etc. The phone is always with me because it's basically my long term memory thanks to some nasty dain bramage...

Counterbalancing my sock drawer. A 4S, so not much cash value, but I kept it as a back-up or potential kid phone. Neither has come to pass.

Keep it for an emergency. No way it's worth the small amount they'll give you in trade. I had an old 5S in the drawer, and I just started using it again when my 6 started acting wonky a couple weeks ago. Touch disease, I think. Not sure how long I want to stick with the 5S, but I'm not longer in a hurry to make a decision. Will probably get a refurb or an XR, but it's possible that I could wait until Fall. If I didn't have the 5S I'd be forced to buy something right away.

My parents are still using our old 4 and 5. I'd like them to have something a little newer (and bigger), but they only use them for calls, so upgrading doesn't make much sense. Maybe a refurb if the battery life plummets.

After pulling the battery, of course.

iP4s & iPod Touch still in drawer. 64GB iP6 Gold & 16GB iP6 Silver traded in on Xr & Xs respectively.

This thread just made me think.... how do/can you reset/erase the drawered iOS devices after they've croaked?
Thanks.

I still have my old 4s, 5s and a 6. Wife gave old 4 to our son, then he got her old 6. The 4s has been used as a video camera several times, mostly at beach or water park. If it gets wet enough to destroy it, I won't care. 5s is still in the drawer. 6 was used on vacation as a backup camera/video camera since my 6s is so full.

Oh yeah, I put a sim in the 6 when I was in Japan. That worked great.

My old iPhones are generally in good condition so. I sell them (the allowance Apple offers is a JOKE).

Samsung has been treating me MUCH better than Apple does. Samsung offered me a GENEROUS trade in allowance so, my Galaxy 7 Edge and my Galaxy Note 8 both went back to Samsung.

Pass it or Keep it.

My mom is on her 3rd hand me down iPhone. I used a hand-me-down for about 2 years and that one is still used (no cell service) every day. My mom still uses my original iPhone (no cell service) for games, the iPhone that was just an iPhone with no numbers or letters. My brother will be getting my mom's current iPhone when she finally buys herself her first new one later this month. My kids have hand-me-down iPhones (no cell service) as iPod Touches. Mrs. Zealand is still using her first iPhone, though will also be getting a new one after 5.5 years. The old one will be re-used.

Everything has value and is re-used appropriately. BTW the single feature keeping the older devices working the longest is… wait for it… storage space. Buy as much as you can and then a little more. It makes a huge difference.

The 4s went to the toddler niblings to be used as a sim-free Touch. The 6s went to the teenage nibling to be used as an actual phone, and was eventually traded up to help fund the kid’s 7 plus purchase. That 4s is still chugging along perfectly, the kids haul it everywhere to play games and watch their beloved pbs shows. With most stores providing WiFi, it’s been super useful to entertain kids while adults get stuff done.

We do hand me downs... but still have left overs. beat 5, newish SE (backup for my current SE), 6th gen Touch and brand new 6 all sitting in a drawer.

Upgraded last year, looked at 8+, but the XR was way better. So did BOGO on 2 XRs.

Gave the youngest a 7, but she never uses it.

Like everyone -- hoping there is an upgrade to the SE, same form factor but with the specs of an 8 or X on the inside.

BT speakers and wireless charging pads have pretty much eliminated cables in the house.

Although we have the spares, no idea why. I should have dumped them the minute we got new. Erase and ebay/swappa/whatever.

I wouldnt give anyone I actually like anything less than a 6.
