What band or musicians did you not like but now do?

Following on the thread below, I've had this exact topic in my head for some time now. I "rediscovered" Talking Heads and I'm sort of blown away. I never really liked them at first.

That is strange. I too have been listening to them now and was only a casual listener back in the day. I even bought a Stop Making Sense t-shirt that I wear now! I have also "discovered" The Waterboys again.

Johnny Cash. As a kid, I hated ALL country music. I'm a Rocker, dude!

But now, I enjoy his stuff very much.

Here's Johnny with only an acoustical guitar and his big voice.

"I wish I was a Fisherman" is one of my top 10 favorite songs. It never leaves my iPod.

I'm just the opposite- I liked the first song I ever heard by the Talking Heads, "Life During Wartime", but never really cared for anything of theirs after that.

Johnny Cash is proof that country music can have a sense of humor and doesn't have to be the same old whining all the time. Buck Owens is another example in that what other country artist has had a song of theirs covered by the Beatles:

The Beatles version of same- [www.youtube.com]

Back to the original question, my pick is Metallica. Although I originally wrote them off as just another head-bangin' metal band, continued exposure to some of their darker, more introspective stuff during the Grunge/Alternative period gave me unexpected appreciation for their versatility as musicians.

The big one for me is David Bowie. I kinda liked a couple of radio hits that I had heard, but I hated most of it. I stayed with a friend for a week in AZ and one of his goals in that visit was to get me to appreciate Bowie. We had Bowie sessions every day and I learned to at least appreciate some of the stuff that I never liked, but really came to LOVE the albums he was making in those days (the mid 90s thru mid 00s)

My favorite Bowie albums are ones that most have never heard of.

Outside (1995) is a friken masterpiece

also love Earthling (1997), Heathen (2002) and Reality (2003)

The stuff that made him famous is WAY down on my list, but at least I can appreciate it now. Seeing him live was striking. That guy had a stage presence unlike anyone I had ever seen and his band was made from absolutely top notch people.

Yes, to the later Bowie stuff, too. I am working on it. I like Heathen a bit, but it's definitely a tough listen for the first few times. I don't know Outside, but I have it digitally somewhere. Honestly, did not care for Blackstar but maybe even that will grow on me eventually.

(More appropriate here, than in the posting earlier about individual songs.)

Was “too cool” for ABBA when they hit, but actually like some of their stuff now.

Frank Sinatra. I hated him and the whole scene. A few years ago a friend loaned me a CD and I immediately bought 22 more.

I grew up with the 'OLD' Sinatra in the background and I always wondered why everyone though he was so talented - at that time he wasn't. But one day I saw a performance of him as a YOUNG skinny guy and his voice was wonderful.

STILL can't stand that music, but I won't say that he can't sing anymore.

I was told the Columbia years Sinatra is what to focus on.

Actually, I like the Capitol years best. Some of the Columbia recordings don't have instrumentation due to a strike. They have backup singers doing the background and I don't like it. He sounds like a different person on the Capitol and Reprise years.

Let's just get this out of the way right now: Add Willie Nelson to that list, stat.
