Queens NY people, a question about the area.

I'm not very familiar with Rego Park and Forest Hills. Is there a best way to get to that location fromthe north? Coming from the Hutch, what would you take? Bonus point if it avoids some hefty tolls.

Also, parking in the area is no t by permit by chance?

Whitestone or Throgs Neck very $$$ (no alterative) to either Grand Central Pkwy or Van Wyck. (I think Grand Central is a better choice. The Van Wyck is suicide) The closer you get to Jewel Ave (harry van ardsdale av) the more stuck the traffic becomes. I recommend getting on the LIE WEST for one or two exits, getting off at Queens Boulevard south. Take Queens Blvd to your destination...much faster than the parkways.

Depending on the neighborhood, paid (formerly metered) parking and free areas as well.

Steve is generally right. Grand Central is generally lighter than Van Wyck. Van Wyck has been under construction for 40 years.

Parking depends on where your destination is. If you're in a residential area, there are many free spots, and many cars vying for them.

Watch out for alternative of the street parking - there are signs on most residential streets, disallowing parking for a 3 hour period one day, and the same for a different day on the other side of the street.

thanks, Steve and Cary. I guess I'm confused about taking the LIE. From what point, exactly?

ending up in Forest Hills, but may stop in Astoria, just because I love it there.

I need to leave my car on the street from about 1pm to midnight somewhere. I can also move it up until about 6pm, if need be, and could take the train to FH.

Again, it depends upon where you need to be. You might take the LIE it you need to be further West than either the van suck or TCL get you. Really hard to say without knowing your destination...

Re: parking, you can generally find a street spot, but you may have to walk a bit once parked. Again, depends on where you need/want to be.

MrBig,

Can't speak for which way is best from coming from the north. I can speak for parking in Forest Hills. My wife lived there prior to our marriage. Parking is awful to the extreme. In some areas, permits are required. Other areas have standard street parking.

Definitely allow extra time to find a parking space. In my experience, of which I have plenty, it can take a minute or two. It can take nearly 30 minutes. You'll never know until you're actually looking for a parking space. The areas immediately around Austin Street are particularly problematic.

bove all, look at the signs. They'll tell you when and for how long you can park and whether or not you need a permit or to drop money into a muni-meter. NYC is _very_ strict when it comes to parking and will ticket you quickly if you don't obey the parking laws.

thanks, again, and thanks RM

would you folks recommend parking near an MTA stop and trying to get to FH that way?

MrBig,

No easy answers. Much of this is 100% dependant on your plans. Some details would be helpful if you want more guidance on this. Are you staying in Forest Hills for multiple days or just driving into the area for the day? My wife lived off of Yellowstone Blvd, right near one end of Austin St.

I used to drive there on Friday evenings, park my car and leave it in the same spot all weekend. Or, during the week, I'd leave my car at my office on Long Island and take the train to and from Forest Hills. It was just a quick ride and vastly easier than trying to find a parking space. The times I drove there during the week, parking proved easy or amazingly difficult. No way to predict.

We often went into Manhattan or hung out in the area. If heading to NYC, we just hopped the subway. While in the area, we just walked or took a subway stop or two. We did our best to not move either of our cars because finding a parking space was such a pain in the ass.

When you say "parking" are you referring to free, non-metered street parking? Because if you are willing to pay for parking in a garage/lot finding parking isn't a concern.

Yes, heading into the stadium area of FH by early Sat afternoon and leaving Sunday morning, a very short stay. I hoped to get into Astoria for lunch somewhere, but open to going anywhere convenient. also, may end up at a local room through AirBnB for the night.

can park in a lot, but would like to avoid the cost, if possible, don't mind walking a mile or so.

There's a concert at the stadium on Saturday night. There is NO chance of parking nearby, probably even in the local garages. I would try the garage at the Darth Vader Building in Kew Gardens. 7 minutes down Queens Boulevard

The Darth Vader Bldg. (FBI HQ and more located there)
address is 80-02 Kew Gardens road, but it's really right on Queens Boulevard. It's less than 150 feet to the subway.
The Forest Hills is one/two stops on the subway F/E trains. Rego Park is a couple of more.

parking entrance. Make right turn on 80th Road (see map on your phone).
It is BEHIND the building.

wonder why they call it The Darth?

Before going with a Plan B. I would risk it and circle the block a few times to try and find local street parking in the exact area you want. We always luck out within 10-15 minutes when visiting my sister in Forest Hills especially in the early afternoon.
