According to the creator of the GIF format (Steve Wilhite):

"The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations," he said. "They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif.' End of story."

It's spelled "GIF", but it's pronounced "throat warbler mangrove".

I am used to using the hard G but in my Photoshop course both pronunciations are acceptable and seem to be used interchangeably without anyone batting an eye.

Why? Because 'cool' is, for most people, and kids in particular, an affectation.

Very few people, and kids in particular, are innately cool.

Language is subject to casual and deliberate abuse under the mantle of laziness and 'language is fluid' mantra, which frequently is a subset of laziness.

The author of the GIF format says it's pronounced jif, like the peanut butter. It's his baby, he gets to name it whatever he wants, and pronounce it any way he wants. His.

He didn't name it an existing word and declare any different pronunciation is wrong. He said how his baby's name is spelled and properly pronounced. Any other way is wrong. Why? Because it's his call.

Anybody is free to disagree and pronounce it how they want. Just as many people do with previously existing words. But they're wrong. That it's an acronym is completely irrelevant. I don't know of any rule that dictates the 'proper' pronunciation of an acronym. There may be one, but the creator has made his choice.

I usually pronounce it as 'jif' and occasionally 'gif'. I do the former not so much as to respect the creator and namer of the format, though there's that, but because GIF makes me think of JIF and then Skippy.

I never think twice about the way anybody pronounces it.

Having a Big Breakfast at McDonald's not too long ago, some kids nearby, talking a little loud, as kids sometimes do, were introducing somebody to the group.

Two of the girls were Elena and Glenda (odd name in this day and age, methinks.) A guy they were introduced to called them eelena and Glenna. Both girls took a couple of minutes to get him to say their names correctly, as in they way they wanted them pronounced. For whatever reason, he wanted to debate the pronunciation.

They names, their way. Seems fair enough to me.

Depends on my audience, but mostly jif -- since that is what the creator wrote. If I say jif to an older or non-tech savvy crowd they think the peanut butter, so I say gif.

although technically its "Graphics Interchange Format" -- so hard G?

Oddly, I have heard people call a PNG file "ping" -- is not called anything but "pee en gee" in my world.

It's an abbreviation so technically it should be said as G.I.F. I pronounce the g with the same sound as the word it's taken from, graphics.

Preach! I don't know why some people feel compelled to argue with people about matters where they clearly lack expertise. I mean, srsly - I've seen this too. It's usually guys that are thickheaded, in my experience.

That delicious sandwich is actually pronounced with a "yee" sound. Year-oh.

Alright, how about this one: "giga-" the prefix meaning billion. The official metric standards say the first "g" is to be pronounced like the "g" in gin or digit or the first "g" in gigantic. Based on that, it is almost universally mispronounced with both "g"s pronounced like the "g" in gift.

1987 is closer to it.
GIF Inventor Steve Wilhite was honored with a 2013 Webby Lifetime Achievement award for inventing the GIF file format in 1987.
