Still ugly????

Come on now, this is a machine of WAR! It's a machine developed by the most ass-kickin-est country on God's Green Earth. Developed to project our God Blessed will, might and power throughout the world. Able to crush and macerate any and all who stand in the way of our Great Glory To God Worthy and Imperious Leader.

Ugly matters little when we've smushed you into paste....

What's the deal? The other side not enough to satisfy your craving for War Mongering? I
see lots of nice pics everyday but I don't post them on here. I think it's so ugly it looks fake
as far as ships go, I realize it's not fake though.

Sorry to break it to you but to 75% of the population it's just a another ship for creating war.
Posting this on the political side first shows that it was posted with political intent to begin with.

Personally it's another big a$$ waste of tax dollars to me. We have enough ships that are
more than capable to get the job done. It's not as if it's stealth ship, it's just another feather
in Bush's Hat. I'm surprised it doesn't say "Mission Accomplished" on it.

C'mon guys, I think Spearmint is just trying a do-over in a positive way - by focusing on the ship's symbolic value with its WTC steel and large flag instead of focusing on the "beauty" thing. If you read Spearmint's other posts outside of these threads I think you get that he is a good guy who actually cares about people and likes to help when he can. I think because of what he does for work and his other dispositions this ship has special significance for him. And, well, because of those strong feelings he might have reacted to some others in a fairly strongly negative way that I don't completely agree with, but I'd rather see everyone give him the benefit of the doubt for this do-over.

I would have rather seen the steel go into a World Trade Center memorial. Something to remember the men and women who died that day then create another article of WAR.

Ditto.

There are many things that I don't agree w/'Mint on, but he's a dedicated part of our community/family. We should have a little understanding for him. Of course, that doesn't mean we should leave opinions unchallenged (especially if done so in a civil manner like everyone had). And don't get me wrong, I think he reacted badly to the whole mess, but I just figured he was having a bad day or whatever. Further, though I might have a particular fondness for military craft, my opinion was with the vast majority of others on the original thread.

P. S. - It's amazing all the drama you can miss out on when gone for a couple of days.

I have to agree. I really doubt that the steel will have much if any lasting impact. In 40 years that boat will be an artificial reef somewhere. If they'd used the metal for a new building, or a memorial it would have been longer lasting and touched more people directly.

I'm not sure why you keep bringing this up. Is there some special attachment to this boat for you? It is not particularly attractive in my opinion. It is grey, metal, and floats. It does its job and that is about all that I can say. The money would have been better spent on humanitarian aid to either our own crumbling country or elsewhere.

I don't know about the rest of you, but considering the armament of that ship, I'd say it can touch people VERY directly.

It really has no armament, all it does is deliver troops. has some defensive capability, but that is it.
Probably CIWS only.

Much of what you all post above is true but don't forget that there is a need for symbolism, whether right or wrong in your eyes, for many in our country after what happened.

You can intellectually dissect and dismiss this as some of us do but a symbol like this has been used a lot of times in this country's past and you know, there are families out there that will take some solice from this thing. There will be frustrated fathers and brothers and family members that can never get at those who took their sons, daughters mothers, fathers, family members etc. and they'll see this ship as some sort of solice.

Plus, let's face it, there's no conscription here, and the way things are going, I'll bet somebody on Capitol Hill thinks this is a great recruiting tool.

But whatever, why not let yesterday go and not jump all over this post? IMHO, we all need to ratchet down our inability to tolorate things that supposedly offend our intellect, pride or sense of our own morals in this country and it even spreads to this board.

If we all don't learn to lighten up a bit, I think it's going to be a bumpy, harsh and pretty nasty future ahead for ourselves and our kids.

Mint posted this properly today and whether it was posted yesterday differently - so what? - he has that right here, as evidenced by the endless takeoff posts we all do (ok, I'm really a big offender there).

This is a FREE place that we all come to to socialize online so IMHO, let's just go back to doing that.

END OF PSA THANK YOU!!
(because this old man's @ss and back hurts from sitting here for so long typing this with 3 frickin' fingers. Now I'm going to go play my guitar for some real fun until the next time I have something silly, smart@#$%& and totally useless to post again - oh and mom...this is why I never had kids!)

Wasn't it determined in the other thread that this is actually a picture of the USS San Antonia, the sister ship of the USS New York?

Yeah, this thing looks like a sitting duck. I mean you could get a blackhawk on the back at least, but that's not gonna stop a destroyer from blowing you out of the water.

As BGnR noted it's basically a transport vesel, to wit an amphibious assault ship. I was an Army guy, but even I know vessels like this do not travel alone. They're escorted by destroyers, cruissers, etc. Hell, the only warships that travel alone are subs.

The French have been known to build some very beautiful ships.
....right, and all of them carry large white flags! The French are better known for blowing up unarmed sailing vessels.

This is my beautiful 'ship', the AC-47D, aka Spooky or Puff, saved my a$$ a few times...
