Anything I should do/see in these cities?
Posted by: M A V I C

I'm going to be traveling a lot. It's mostly for work, but I should have at least a few hours free in each city.

Hartford, CT
Minneapolis, MN
Orlando, FL (Disney World is out)
Salt Lake City, UT
Toronto, ON
Cary, NC

NSC Velodrome in Blaine MN (a little north of the Twin Cities) if there are any events scheduled when you are in town. I was pretty unimpressed with the megamall, but they did have a Tesla storefront.

For Salt Lake a drive into the mountains can be awesome. Weather dependent.
The Salt Lake is of interest as a geological oddity. Sand fleas are nasty as heck.
I spent a lot of my summers in the 60's at this very area while Dad did his post doc geology research in the mountains. We lived in a cabin or a tent each summer. My older sister and I would sell worms to fishermen fishing in the lake, then take our pennies and buy hot chocolate or candy, which we would share with our little brother and sisters.

You may not be into religious sites, but I found the Mormon Tabernacle (on the Temple grounds) was a great visit. Built in the 1860's with a roof no one thought would hold up, without nails (they used dowels and leather strips), and with unbelievable acoustics (they will ask someone in front to speak in a normal voice and the tour at the back can hear them), it is a fascinating piece of architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright called it a marvel.

For Minneapolis:

Target Field is a nice ballpark if you are downtown and there is a game. Or the new Vikings stadium. Other than the sports there are a lot of interesting design features in both buildings.

You could take the light rail to Mall of America, but unless you like shopping there isn't much there.

Are you bringing a bike? There are some nice trails around that you could get to: [www.mtbproject.com]

There are a lot of automotive events in the summer:

So, you drew the short straw.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

For Orlando, go to Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Rent a Swan Boat to pedal your way around the lake.

Great Salt Lake itself is cool as was mentioned, specifically during sunset. Antelope Island State Park is a good access/vantage point. The Temple Square is nice to quickly tour but the best thing about Salt Lake City are the surrounding mountains. Head into the mountains on nice scenic drives. Park City is a 30min to 40min drive away depending on where in SLC you’re coming from, and I recommend that over SLC. You get a cool town surrounded by mountains. The most photographed spot in Utah is the McPolin Barn in Park City. Utah Olympic Park, where the Olympic ski jump events were held, is worth checking out. Park City, Salt Lake City, and surrounding areas are meccas for mountain biking, hiking and skiing. I just spent a few months in Park City again.

Sort of. For most of these trips, I'm the holder of the straws and when someone drew the short straw, I took it instead.

If it was me, I'd go see a Minnesota United soccer game at Allianz Field.
And visit Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center (at the very least, its sculpture garden), and the Weisman Art Museum.
And drive up to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
I'd like to try to see Paisley Park some day, but it's crazy expensive and they don't allow you to take phones or cameras inside. Still, it must be a very interesting tour.

Hmmmmm, you got me thinking. In Minneapolis, I'll be there with some designers. We could make a group trip out of it.

Take a walk along Queen Street West and King Street West in Toronto for some interesting shopping and people watching.
