I admit it, I like mayonnaise on my french fries

I'm sitting here eating lunch at my desk, smothering my fries with the mayo intended for my hamburger. This stuff is good.

I work for a European company, maybe all of the Europeans I work with have had a bad influence on me.

My 16 y.o. niece loves mayo on her french fries. She also loves mayo on her corn on the cob (which is then sprinkled with cayenne pepper.) Her mom is Mexican and that is how she has always prepared corn on the cob for her. If I didn't hate mayo, I'd give it a shot! smiling smiley

I have to admit, when having fish & chips, I use the tartar sauce on my chips.

Only lemon juice and malt vinegar on the fish.

Mayo on fries IS good. My German friend recommends rot-weiss which is red and white, ketchup and mayonaise together. She says the Belgian twice-fried potatoes are the best.

Living in Southern California, a.k.a., Northern Mexico, I have never seen, or heard of that practice. Must be just her Mom.
Also, being a maven of the roasted corn carts that jingle the bells during fresh corn season selling delicious ears of fresh roasted corn, I have never seen, or even been offered mayo as a condiment. Butter, salt and sugar is it.

It was very popular in the New Orleans area for ages (going back to when I was in high school, which I graduated in 1984) to get ranch dipping sauce with your delivery pizza -- not for the pizza itself, but for the crust. Not my cup of tea at all; I thought it rather gross.

I like Dijonaisse on a sandwich sometimes, and I sprinkle some Tobasco (Avery Island tobasco, there is no other Tobasco sauce) on chicken patties and the like before I grill or bake them.

Mayo on fries I've never seen, and I like mayo on a sandwich. My son loves Popeye's BBQ sauce with fries (as well as chicken strips, of course); closest store-brand is Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce.

BGnR- maybe it's a regional/cultural thing? The food carts in the Mexican neighborhoods around my old office (NW side of Chicago) all serve mayo with their "elotes". I have also seen it prepared this way at a street fair in Milwaukee.

h'- have you seen this in your neck of the woods?

Interesting! (at least to me) smiling smiley

Just found this on Chowhound:

And this on a local website:
Elotes Vendors
Streetside, Citywide
File under: Best on the street
While the literal translation of elotes means corn, these cups (or cobs on a stick) of hot boiled corn on the cob, with chile, mayonnaise, butter and cheese are far more than that. You won’t find elotes in any restaurant, at least not like this, but they’re still an absolute must-have for any Chicago dweller. You’ll find elotes carts throughout the city’s Hispanic neighborhoods, especially during the summer months, when they often compete for your patronage along Chicago Avenue with fruit vendors selling mango, watermelon and cucumber. But many of Chicago’s elotes vendors endure the cold months, stationing themselves near busy intersections (there is often one near the Dunkin’ Donuts at Ashland and Milwaukee in Wicker Park). Cups of corn, cut from the cob, usually run $1.25-$2. The kind soul serving up this delicious and guilty pleasure may not speak English. Just point and smile, they’ll know what you’re there for.

My neighbor moved here from Mexico when she was 15 and I have been to a number of
cookouts at her house with her parents, brothers and sisters and extended family

They serve corn on the cob boiled until it is soggy and then covered in butter and mayo
sprinkled with cayenne pepper and then covered in white shredded cheese.

I must say it has to be an acquired taste. They all love it and I can't stand it that way

I come from the school of boiled but still crisp when you bite it - butter and salt & pepper.

I, too, am a mayonnaise on my fries lover. MGS - I've been ostracized as well.

Then again, I love poutine from my years in Montreal. Fresh french fries, cheese curds and gravy. Heart attack on a plate, sure, but it's the best food in the world on a cold day.

I decided a while ago that it's probably best not to make fun of what other people add to their food, since someone somewhere is probably equally grossed out by something I happen to love.

My father used to butter his potato chips. There's almost nothing you can add to food that is as bizarre (and gratuitously fatty) as that one was.

Well add me to the list of those who eat fries with mayo.

To make it really good though, mix a whole bunch of chipotle Tabasco sauce into the mayo first.

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

gravy aka "wet" fries -- mmmmm -- been 20 years since i had that

when i was a kid, we used mayo as salad dressing (we were poor)

mayo, ranch, bbq suace, chipolte sauce, mayo or ketchup on fries is ok

ranch on pizza is ok -- my 2 year old calls it "dip" and love it too

mustard or ketchup on eggs is ok

mustard or ketchup on tater tots is ok

mayo and avocado on toast is ok

Fries with mayo are great.

For those of you who think it's "sick," I take it you also do not eat potato salad?

Next time you make grilled cheese but your butter is too hard to spread on the bread, try a thin coating of mayo instead. Oil is oil, and you get a nice toasty sandwich but it doesn't taste at all like mayo. And the mayo is always ready to spread on the bread.

I am clearly in the minority in my dislike for mayo! In general, I am not a fan of white creamy foods- mayo, miracle whip, tarter sauce, most salad dressings (I like a good blue cheese dressing every once in a while), sour cream etc.

My favorite deli makes its tuna salad with just enough mayo to hold it together so it has no mayo taste. It is so good and I can't ever make it as well on my own. I can't stand mayo based potato or macaroni salad.

there was a burger joint I always stopped at for lunch on the way to one of our facilities. They had some sauce that was halfway between tartar sauce and horseradish. It had some heat, and wasn't too sweet. They also had bottomless fries. Now that they are gone, I can't find or make anything like that sauce. A little thinner than mayo, but still thick enough to cling to steak fries.

damn I miss that place.

Corn on the cob with lime juice, mayo, and cayenne pepper. It's a regional Latin American thing -- I've certainly had it at a couple of Cuban restaurants before.

And for those of you who love fries and mayo: you must visit Frjtz when in San Francisco. Delicious twice-cooked Belgian-style fries with dozens of choices of sauces. I like the Chipotle remoulade, basically mayo with enough chipotle pepper to give it a little kick. Wash 'em down with a Leffe or Chimay. Heaven!
