iPod Gurus: 2nd Gen 10gb iPod worth $90?

A friend of a friend is selling their 2nd Gen 10gb iPod so they can upgrade.
I know next to nothing about the different generations other than searching completed auctions on eBay. Is $90 a good price for an older unit? What should it come with besides a charger? Any way to test the battery on charge time? Or should I just get a new one. Looks like this model is firewire only. Haven't seen it yet but supposed to be in "good condition". T.I.A.

I have one of these-it came with Firewire cable and earbuds with remote control and a simple case with belt kit.
I would test it for battery life.
You may be better off spending a little more at the Apple refrub store for a more current model that has a newer battery .
[eshop.macsales.com] has new batteries for a good price

Excuse me if this is a newbie question but is there a test for battery life or do you just charge and play till it runs out?

I have one also and like it fine because I mostly use it in the car with cigarette lighter and cassesette plater. I would not put much faith in a three year old battery.

Also I use it some at home with external spearkers with the firewire charger plugged in.

Guess it can't hurt to look but with an older battery I may just go for a newer unit as Ken suggests. It is the firewire cable that charges the unit, right? The Mac has to be on and not in sleep mode to charge?

Personally? I'm not telling you what to do but you can get a Refurbished iPod w/ Click Wheel (20GB) for $189 at the apple store w/ a 1 year warranty (I think that's the warrenty on the refurbished iPods)... for $219 you can get one in color...

I just think I would at least come up with a little more cash to get one w/ a warrenty... Just my 2 cents...

If it is comes with all the stuff and holds a decent charge, that is not a bad deal. I've been using one almost daily since it was new and battery still holds charge of about 4 hours. As stated above OWC has great deals on long-life batteries.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again everyone...can't hurt to look at it.
I almost paid @ $50 for an offbrand mp3 player at Frye's so $90 for 10gb pod sounded pretty good. I have a call out to him. I assume the firewire cable is not a "common" cable?

You can pick up batteries cheaper than the OWC price. I've seen them for as low as $16. Bear in mind that the 2g iPod has an issue with the headphone jack coming loose from the motherboard after a few years...evidence of this is static sounds in the headphones when you wiggle the headphone plug. This costs around $75 to fix.

any 6pin to 6pin firewire cable will work.

$190 is more than 2x $90. some people don't want to spend that much on an MP3 player.

I just popped the $20 for a new 2100 MAh battery for my 2G 10gig iPod. Mine was still getting around five hours of continuous play from a charge but that wouldn't get me through an 8 hour shift without plugging in to the wall charger.

This new battery will go for almost three days without needing a charge!!!

If the Pod comes with an external charger and firewire cable, earbuds with remote and a case of some sort and holds a charge for at least 4 hours I would say its worth $75 at most as an MP3 player.

As a 10gig firewire hard drive that you can use as a music player too I would say that it is worth $50 - 75.

Well, turns out it holds about 3.5 hours of charge. It did come with everything but the case. I went ahead a got it for $90. Ordering a battery from OWC.
I figured it would be better than an "off brand" mp3 1gb player new at @ the same price. Thanks for the input everyone.
