tell me about updating an OS

With perhaps one exception (I remember buying Tiger CDs), I don't think I've ever actually updated one of my Mac's OS's. I was always too cheap or it seemed like too much trouble, and so I generally just waited until I got a new Mac 3 or 4 years later.

Now I want to install some software that needs at least 10.13, and I'm still running 10.11. Since the hardware is only a little over a year old, I never thought about being that much behind the times.

First, any reason NOT to update a Mid 2011 Mac Mini Server to 10.13? I have up-to-date Time Machine backups. Do I need to make safety copies outside TM of things like fonts or application prefs that I'll want in the new OS?

Second, is it really true that upgrades like this are now free; that you just visit the App Store online?

I'm using Maverick on two different iMacs (2008 24"-2011 27") and have yet been able to upgrade either. A third iMac is running Mohave, I haven't attempted to upgrade that.

10.13 High Sierra is as high as that mini will go (and you will not have handoff support for Bluetooth 4).

Do you already have the install disks? If not you will need to follow this procedure most likely to get the full install and not just the patch. [mycyberuniverse.com]

"Have yet been able"? You mean you were unable? Or just haven't gotten round to it?

FWIW, I upgraded my 2009 iMac to Sierra when I installed a 500GB SSD and replaced my wife's Windows PC with it. Runs fine.
