You're apparently old, if...

...you remember when SNL was funny.

The first sketch, which intros the show, was horrific. Not a single laugh or smile, but the audience loved it.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), the reason I braved SNL, had an OK monolog, but was not funny the rest of the show.

The WANU News bit and the Weekend Update were ok, but the rest was a train wreck, so bad I almost looked forward to Taylor Swift.

There's an expression something like 'never meet your heroes'. My corollary is 'never see a personality you like, on SNL'.

After that extended WANU sketch I couldn't stand to watch any more. I went back to True Detective season 3 epsiode 1 (now available on DVD at you library). No-laughs opening bit, Phoebe is a clever sprite, but SNL should fire all their writers.

SNL should fire all their writers.

Back in the olden days when SNL actually was funny to the point that water-cooler conversations on Mondays were dominated by "Did you see ______ in the _______ skit on SNL?!?", at least among the "cool" co-workers*, SNL drew most of their writers from improv groups like Second City. Where do they get them from now?

*Just told my age in a couple of ways:
1. Water coolers instead of bottled water.
2. Having co-workers that you could talk to without having to mentally scan and edit every word and topic for any conceivable 3rd party offensiveness or PC "wrongthink" before speaking.

They already did back in 2014.

Didn't they do it at least once before that as well?

Their best skits were always poking fun at politics. With the dumpster fire that’s now hourly in politics, they cannot compete.

The SNL opening sketch and news are the best parts of most shows.

SNL won an Emmy this year for the Adam Sandler show earlier this year - the whole show was very funny and also sad during Adam's Chris Farley tribute link

Having really enjoyed "Fleabag" I would blame this on the ultra-PC SNL writers room

San Antonio, TX (in the old city)

"All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

To be fair, SNL on their best day still couldn't couldn't have competed with Fleabag.

The Ms. Pricilla Goodbody's ultra PC ethic would never let a competing episode on the air.

Fleabag was amazing.

I'd like to see her one woman show of Fleabag but I don't know if it was recorded.

SNL, comedy of the absurd.

Nowadays reality is so absurd... hard to compete.

....SNL isn't funny any more [ for a decade more at least ].....they keep the unfunny ones.....but let go of the potentially good ones......Keenan Thompson for that many years.......really....???

....the writers are bad....the stuff they come up with is cringeworthy......

I for one liked the cold open and loved the WANU sketch.

For context, I've been watching SNL from the beginning. It's had its ups and downs. The current writing is very uneven, but often at least amusing.

That said, I'm old enough to watch SNL on Sunday morning after breakfast. So, I can fast-forward through the unwatchable stuff like the commercial for the British reality show and the rap artist of the week.

And, now, another episode of Samurai Congressional Hearing!
