A family intending to create a "gender reveal" spectacle put gunpowder in a homemade contraption, expecting to blow some colored powder skyward, authorities said.
But instead, the device functioned essentially as a pipe bomb, and shrapnel from the explosion killed one of the celebrating relatives Saturday, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office in central Iowa.
"Gender reveal parties" have become increasingly popular and more elaborate over the past decade. Families have crafted ambitious plans to publicly announce the biological sex of a soon-to-be-born child, often unveiling visually striking pink or blue materials and publicizing the revelation on social media.
Iowa authorities released details Monday about what happened over the weekend, along with the name of the victim of the accident outside a home in rural Knoxville.
Pamela Kreimeyer, 56, was killed instantly around 4 p.m. Saturday when metal debris struck her in the head, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
Family members had started experimenting the day before with various explosive materials, investigators said.
Six people, including Kreimeyer and the expectant mother, gathered Saturday and put gunpowder inside a homemade stand that was welded to a metal base.
They put a piece of wood on top of the gunpowder and some powder of an unspecified color on top of that. The stand had a hole drilled in the side for a fuse.
Finally, tape was wrapped over the top of the assembly. The idea was for the gunpowder to blast the powder indicating a boy or girl out the top of the stand.
But the explosion instead sent metal shrapnel flying. Kreimeyer — who was standing with family members about 45 feet away — was struck and killed, the news release said. The debris continued flying for well over 100 more yards, the sheriff's office said.
"This family got together for what they thought was going to be a happy event with no intent for anyone to get hurt," Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said in a written statement. "What ended up happening was that Pamela Kreimeyer, a wife, mother and grandmother, was killed by a piece of metal where a metal stand, gunpowder and colored powder were involved."
Sandholdt said the risks of the ingredients for the cannon weren't worth it: "This is a reminder that anytime someone mixes these things, there is a high potential for serious injury or death; please do not take these unnecessary risks. My condolences go out to the family."
Family members declined to comment Sunday. The sheriff's office did not identify any of the other people present during the explosion.
An investigation continues. The sheriff's office declined to say whether criminal charges are being considered.

Self-inflicted wounds and the concept of taking responsibility for one’s own decisions and actions seem apposite here.
And that's not what any of this is about, and you know it.
'Self-inflicted' wounds reads as though they were deliberate, where 'accidentally self-inflected wounds' is more accurate, in this case.
Taking responsibility is not the same as assigning responsibility.
It's about assigning blame and feeling entitlement to make jokes.
That's what this is about.
