Thank you very much and I pay this forward. Now, if I can only find my DD 214...

Thanks for the link! I actually don't know where it is! I see a lot of freebies out there for vets today but I need proof. Maybe I could see if my uniform still fits...

Thanks y'all, I appreciate your recognition more than some stupid BS sale (ru listening car dealers?).

DP, once you have your 214 you should apply for a Veterans ID Card too.
VA ID Card

And a big thank you to the crazy sobs that weren't 'military' but are still veterans in my book...

My sister was telling me yesterday that our father wants to go cheap on his funeral (he’s 91) so he recently checked out the VA cemetery near where he lives to get a free burial. He told the manager he was a vet but didn’t have his DD-214. The manager told him he could get him a new one if my father would provide his social security number and birth date. My sister is waiting for the DD-214 to arrive.

What would that do for me that my DD Form 2 doesn't?

Yeah, OK, thanks, but this is one group I would love to see go extinct.

Is that 2 as it 214?

[I just realized there are other DD2-- forms that qualify.]

Apparently it's main purpose is to allow one to receive discounts offered to veterans, without requiring them to carry their 214.

There are online exchanges that are for use only by mil-spec people, past and present. The VID allows to confirm qualifying status.

With the ability to purchase military uniforms and impersonate veterans, those offering discounts would probably appreciate an actual, official document.

None of this may be for you.

I've got my 214 so I'll start with the license endorsement, as it's pretty easy.

Then I'll go for the VIC.

No

The Form 214 are discharge papers, while the 2 is an ID card that gets you into places etc.

Never been one for the free lunch thing.

I do like discounts.

Planning on going out to eat at our favorite Mom and Pop diner.

Funny thing is that while I was in I felt like a second class citizen, even a third class one.

But hey

The Veterans ID Card is also a lot more convenient to carry (credit card size).

Never been one for the free lunch thing.

Agreed.

I've never used a uniform for a free or discounted meal. Ever.

I've seen what look like WWII/Korea and maybe early Viet Nam vets wearing their hats or patrol jackets. I like that they do that.

On the other hand, I proudly go to Sizzler, Habit Burger, and any place that will give me a free lunch or discount on my birthday, in return for letting them spam my InBox.

I just wish In-n-Out had such a deal.

Nothing, a DD2 means you're Retired. Shouldn't need to show a 214 if you have
the DD2.

Personally, I will not show my 214 to a non-government agency. If they won't accept
the Vets' ID, I walk. (Blocks 23 & 25 are mostly redacted anyway!)
