Guess it was that long ago…

…or I'm that old, but wondering that no one seems to recall (and I don't mean just on this forum) this is the anniversary of JFK's assassination. I know it was way back there in history, but it's a day i won't ever forget.

And we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.

"but it's a day i won't ever forget."

Neither will I. It was my first thought this morning when I wrote today's date on a check.

I was too young to remember and I admit - I forgot that today was the day. Completely slipped my mind.

Yes, today is Assassination Day. A bright fall day, if I recall.

I remember it well. I was 14, and he was the first president I whose election I followed, and I liked him. For me, the world became a little less safe that day.

It was the day I lost the last of my childhood innocence.

For my generation, we all remembered where we were when we heard. I think that 9/11 has some similarities, but this was a direct, extreme, personal loss.

I told the history class I was teaching yesterday in a roundabout way.

The day before he was killed, he was in Tampa for a motorcade. That street is now named Kennedy Blvd.

Still when I asked them what today would be the anniversary of, only one came even close ("wasn't some president shot? what was his name?)

this is the anniversary of JFK's assassination.

I was thinking of that this morning, and later, surprised that it wasn't posted here, not that I think it should be, or shouldn't.

It doesn't bother me not to see it posted. It's not as though there's some lack of respect of the person or tragedy.

I wasn't born yet. But today also would have been my dad's 92nd birthday. He passed away two years ago. Happy Birthday Fa!

My first thought when I checked my iPhone upon awakening and saw the date.

As it happens, this anniversary falls on the same day of the week as the event itself.

It is what it is.

I had to look up the year: 1963.

I was in a high school math class. The teacher told us what happened and school was cancelled.

I started re-reading Stephen King’s 11/22/63 earlier this week. Great book, for anyone who might be interested.

Interesting. I happened to mention it at work today and none of my co-workers had a clue. Actually, one had a clue. He was pretty sure it was sometime in November. Other than remembering the event itself (I was nine at the time), the date is also significant to me because it happens to be the date of my father's passing 13 years ago. It's also the date of my boss's birthday.

I must admit I was quite surprised that my co-workers didn't know. I would have thought it would have been in history books. But then again, sometimes I think people only remember the date of 9/11 is because, well...

I remember my mother crying about it. She knew the Kennedy family from the Southampton social scene and had met him when she was an impressionable teenager girl.

I failed to notice the anniversary. I remember where I was and what I was doing as a 12 y.o.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

One of the comics in today's paper references the fact that this is a Friday 11/22 and I had to think just a second why that was significant. I was a freshman in college and heard it during lunch hour. My 1:00 class in German I was cancelled because the professor was too distraught.

That event, like so many are just another event to remember from history class. When you are just reading about it, Kennedy, Vietnam, moon walks all are "just" history. For that matter, there are a lot of folks around for whom 9/11 is "just" history.

Gotta pull up that Beloit College list of what this year's freshman have (and have not) experienced.
