What’s your item?

You got that right. Our well is about 90 years old and is the best tasting water you'll ever drink. It's also ran through a whole house cartridge type filter. I refill empty Gatorade bottles and put them in the fridge for outside chores.

My well is one of the few things I miss about living in the countyside in Colorado. Criminy we had great water. Also miss the 8x8 outside sauna, cold plunge, and hottub.

cbelt, come by for dinner some time. The way we cook Brussel Sprouts has made a few converts (baked until crispy, coated in coconut oil and salt). (we're in Sarasota, FL, text before coming)

There's nothing wrong with Brussels Sprouts; they make good ammo for slingshots, and if you buy them fresh, they very handily come attached to a perfect storage holder!

I’m sure city water is fine coming out of the treatment plant, it’s the pipes between the plant and my place. Tap water at my place leaves all sorts of mineral stains on all the fixtures.

I love LeCroix, probably for the same reasons that you don't like it. It's a subtle hint of flavor, not a sledgehammer to the mouth.

Kale

Massaged it, braised it, chopped it super fine, liquefied it and covered it in Ranch dressing. NOPE

Fortunately my GI has ordered me to avoid kale, asparagus, brocolli and all other very high fiber foods to avoid another blockage incident. I miss all but the kale.

Saigon Brussels Sprouts

Ingredients

¼ cup of fish sauce
1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
Juice of ½ lime
3 tablespoons of brown sugar
16 ounces of Brussels sprouts
2 cloves of garlic, chopped finely
3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil (or canola oil)

Method

Whisk together the fish sauce, rice vinegar, lime juice, and brown sugar in a small bowl to create the Saigon vinaigrette. Set aside.

Slice sprouts in half. Peel the leaves off of 5-6 sprouts by halving them, removing the choke, and then picking the leaves off the stem. This means you’ll have a mix of halved sprouts and loose sprout leaves, which will result in a mix of tender and crunchy when you eat. In a large cast iron (or other ovenproof) skillet, heat the oil over medium heat until you notice it begin to shimmer, about 3-5 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Place the sprouts and leaves in the skillet in one even layer, cut side down. (You don’t want to be steaming them here by piling them up on top of one another. If your skillet is too small, work in batches.) Once the face-down part begins to brown, about 5 minutes, toss them with 3 tablespoons of the saigon vinaigrette and place the skillet in the oven and roast for 10 minutes or until tender.

Remove from the oven and serve immediately. The rest of the vinaigrette can be refrigerated (for up to 1 week) for later use. I used mine recently as the sauce in a stir-fry and it was phenomenal!

Beets.

I am also generally not a fan of Brussels sprouts or avocado, but I have had them prepared in ways that at least made them edible.

I have yet to encounter any such preparation that does the same for beets.

I'm boggled.

There are more than enough foods out there that I like, and many that I have not yet tried. Why eat something I don't like? And why more than once?

Brussels Sprouts are not food. Neither is dill. YMMV.

There are many others. Blackberries, for example. But, for different reasons. I know what they should taste like, and the stuff you get from the supermarket don't.

I might put chicken in that category. Factory farms have bred out all the taste.

You and Dennis S. have the right idea.

Bury the sprouts in other flavors so that you can't taste them.

Florida, sorry tuqqer. I have good family there too.

sprouts, sliced in half, roasted at 400º, ass side down, in a bit of olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil or butter. A bit of thyme if you like. Till they are quite caramelized, 20 mins or so. A bit of fresh ground salt, we like the pink Himalayan that CostCo and TJs carry.

I hated the little f'kers until my girl made them that way.
Same with sparrows guts. A bit of rosemary is good.
I've recently learned to like cauli, properly prepped, as well.
More or less the same but with pepper flakes or Aleppo flakes, teense salt.

I still hate milk chocolate. ich poo!

@Fritz- That's how I make them. Everybody loves them (the only time they ever eat them, I'm told)
BTW, if they are Brussel sprouts...

is the stalk they come on a 'Brussel'?

Kale? Well, you know.

Starchy baked potatoes. They've gotten even less appealing over time. In order to make them edible, I've got to cover it with so much butter+sour cream+cheese/whatever that the potato basically disappears.

Little red potatoes - love em. Idahos, and stuff made from them (like the ubiquitous hash browns!), you can have. Bleh.

Kale, no matter how my wife cooks it, trying to make it palatable. She loves it just because it’s nutritious. That just doesn’t work for me. Same with Brussels sprouts and cabbage in salads. I could go on.

I think that a lot of the "I hate xxx vegetable" comments are from folks who've never had them prepared well. Growing up in England in the bad old days before the food improved (i.e. the 1960s) I grew to hate lots of veggies that were cooked to death (often boiled) until they got bitter (brussel sprouts, kale, sweet potatoes, zucchini, squash, spinach, beets, etc). It turns out that if you spend some time learning how to properly prepare these things (look to Mediterranean cookbooks for ideas) they can all taste delicious.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

dieting,

i've considered the local bariatric programs but they all use liquid diets, which seem to crash your metabolism.

one guy I know (well over 6' tall) lost 90+ lbs on one of the above, but was then told his steady-state was now only ~1500 Calories daily.
